Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

I STEADIER STEP ~~

Psalm 119:165,167,168  "Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.  I obey your statutes, for I love them greatly, I obey your precepts and your statues for all my ways are known to you."

“It fortifies my soul to know That, though I perish, Truth is so: That, howsoe’er I stray and range, Whate’er I do, Thou dost not change. I steadier step when I recall That, if I slip Thou dost not fall.”

Arthur Hugh Clough

Heavenly Father, how wonderful to know that though I often slip and stumble, You cannot fall.  You have me in your loving grip and you know when I'm prone to stumble and slip before I do.  Thank you for always holding me with your strong right arm!  Thank you for the peace we have when we love and study your Word.  We pray this in your Holy and Majestic Name, Jesus Christ.  Amen

A prayer for your new home

A new home … how exciting, Lord!

New adventures, new experiences … rooms to decorate, a space to call my own to get things just as I want them, a garden to tend, somewhere I can create my own identity.

Thank you for all the possibilities, Lord. I pray for happy times here, with family and friends.
And, Lord, please help me get rid of some of the junk I’ve accumulated over the years. Make my life simpler!

At this time of moving, may I also have a “spring-clean” of my own life to draw closer to you. May I get rid of some of the clutter that slows down my spiritual life.

Lord Jesus, I give you this new home. Come into it with your Spirit. May he fill every room. And I come to you with my life, too, Lord. I give my life again to you. Come and fill me afresh with your living Spirit in every area of my life.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

prayer for a heavenly perspective

I pray that our hearts will be flooded with light so that we can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.

I also pray that we will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe. The same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.

prayer to let go of anger

... quote by Henri Nouwen

God, hear me and answer me.

You know I am troubled by thoughts and feelings of anger, resentment and bitterness.
You also know why.

And You know how deep the hurt goes and how long I have lived with it.

But I don’t want to live with it any longer.

I don’t want to be an angry, resentful and bitter person.

With Your help, I release my anger into Your hands.

I surrender my resentment.

I let go of my bitterness.

Help me to keep letting go and release these toxic emotions as often as they try to return.

Amen

PRAYING FOR SPIRITUAL WISDOM

Prayer for Spiritual Wisdom

Ephesians 1:15-21

"Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you making mention of you in my prayers;  that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion and every name that is named not only in this age but also in that which is to come."
Amen and Amen!

Lord, help me live as a child before you

    O LORD, my heart is not lifted up;
    my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
    like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
    PSALM 131:1-2

Lord, help me pray with childlike faith like the Psalmist so that I might too experience peace in my troubled soul.

Help me remember and experience the reality of what it means to be Your child.

Help me to know that You are always with me and that I have free 24/7 access to Your presence simply because You are my Heavenly Father.

Thank you for your love to me shown through Your Precious Son, my Lord, and Saviour, Jesus Christ!

Amen

Dear Lord,

As we live in your light, help us to reflect your light.

Bless us that we might shine your love and grace.

Let your light in us glow, that others may see you in the world.

HOW TO PRAY

Matthew 6:6-8

"But as for you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.  And when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition a the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words.  So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him."

Heavenly Father, teach us to retreat to the private room, leave the cares of the world outside and open our hearts. Give us the deeper power in private prayer, More sweetness in Thy Word, a more steadfast grip on it's truth.  (Valley of Vision)

Lord, teach me to pray

God, grow my capacity to see you for who you really are.

Help me see your power, love, and wisdom in such a way that my heart feels toward you like a young child who looks up in awe to his father's abilities.

Cause me to be more affected by your stunning presence, person, and plans than I am by the brokenness of this world.

Help me to look at my problems with your resources in view, my failures with your gracious love, and my fears with your calming presence and unstoppable promises.

Help me walk in childlike faith throughout this day.

Cause my heart to say with the psalmist, “Our God is in heaven and does whatever he pleases,” and at the same time, that it pleases you to do what’s best for us (Psalm 115:3, Romans 8:28).

    Amen.

a meditation on the mystery of life

To pray is to regain a sense of the mystery that animates all beings,
the divine margin in all attainments.

Prayer is our humble answer to the inconceivable surprise of living.

It is all we can offer in return.

Who is worthy to be present at the constant unfolding of time?

Here we are admist the meditation of the land,
the songs of the water, the humility of the flowers,
flowers wiser than all alphabets.

Suddenly we feel embarrassed,
ashamed of our complaints and clashes in the face of tacit glory.

How strange we are in the world!

Only one response can maintain us:
gratefulness for the gift of our unearned chance to serve, to wonder,
to love life and each other.

It is gratefulness which makes our small souls great.

Amen

prayer to trust his leadership

It is helpful to know that trusting God is about trusting His life in ours.

Depending on him is to rely on his leadership in our lives.

It causes us to look for him within rather than without.

Gives us a sense of confidence and power rather than fear.

So I offer this prayer hoping it will help us all trust God more.

Loving God,

Please grant me peace of mind and calm my troubled heart.

My soul is like a turbulent sea.

I can't seem to find my balance so I stumble and worry constantly.

Help me to walk the path that is laid out for me.

THE THRONE

O God of my Delight,  Thy throne of grace is the pleasure ground of my soul.  Here I obtain mercy in time of need, here see the smile of thy reconciled face, here joy pleads the name of Jesus, here I sharpen the sword of the Spirit,
anoint the shield of faith,
put on the helmet of salvation,
gather manna from thy Word,
am strengthened for each conflict,
nerved for the upward race,
empowered to conquer every foe;
Help me to come to Christ as the fountain head of descending blessings,
as a wide open flood-gate of mercy.
I marvel at my insensate folly, that with such enriching favors within my reach
I am slow to extend the hand to take them.
Have mercy upon my deadness for thy Name's sake.
Quicken me, stir me, fill me with holy seal.
Strengthen me that I may cling to three
and not let thee go.

Lead me Lord, for I have no idea where I am going

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore I will trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

Oh, that we would begin to understand the NEED for continually DEVOTING ourselves to PRAYER.

That we would see the necessity of being in CONSTANT communion and FELLOWSHIP with Christ.

That we would be DEVOTED to Jesus with all of our hearts and souls and minds.

It’s time for Christians to grab hold of this TRUTH and make it a reality in our daily lives.

PRAYER is the key to our spiritual growth. Our spiritual fervor. Our spiritual survival.

Pray without ceasing. Pray always. Pray continually.

OPEN MY EYES

PSALM 119;18  "Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.

Father, how wonderful our eyesight is.  How wonderful to behold your creation.  But how much more marvelous is to have our spiritual eyes opened to see your wonderful truths in your Word.  Holy Father, Wonderful Son, Holy Spirit Helper.  Give us understanding as we behold the wonderful truths in your precepts, commands and instructions.  With that understanding please give us a heart of obedience to follow your Word.  To seek Your guidance in our everyday lives.  Thank you for loving us enough to give us your written Word.  Oh as the Psalmist pleaded.....Open our eyes.  Amen.

A prayer to be holy as God is holy

1 Peter 1:15–16 (ESV)
15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Heavenly Father
I am in awe that You call me holy.
It is at times hard to imagine but because of You and what You have done for me, I am holy.
I am holy in terms of being set apart by You
I am holy in terms of being called out of darkness into Your wonderful light
I am holy in terms of being adopted and made Your child, a child of God.

Help me not to forget that because I am set apart by You and for You, a holy God, I am also called to be holy as You are holy.
Help me to remember that my conduct should reflect Your moral holiness - Your holiness that sets You apart from everything else.

Help me to be aware daily of Your presence and Your holiness.
Give me Your grace and power to be holy in my conduct.

In Jesus's name
AMEN

Something very deep and mysterious, very holy and sacred, is taking place in our lives right where we are, and the more attentive we become the more we will begin to see and hear it. A prayer before it is too late

Proverbs 30:7–9 (ESV)
7 Two things I ask of you; deny them not to me before I die:
8 Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me,
9 lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the LORD?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.

Lord, help me today to learn honesty and have integrity before You.
Help me to focus on You daily so that You may stop me from becoming deceitful.
Help me to be honest in the way I interact with others.
The world keeps tempting me to lie, cheat, and manipulate my way to fame and fortune.
Help me not to fall into this trap.

Lord, help me to be contented in You.
Help me to be grateful for all You have blessed me with.
Help me not to seek great wealth, lest I foolishly think I don't need You.
Give me enough to care for those I am responsible for so that I am protected from the temptations to steal or cheat to meet my obligations.
Lord, help me honor Your name in how I live my life.

In Jesus' name, I pray
AMEN

when we are weary

O Lord my God,

I believe in you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Insofar as I can, insofar as you have given me the power, I have sought you.

I became weary and I labored.

O Lord, my sole hope, help me to believe and never to cease seeking you.

Grant that I may always and ardently seek out your countenance.

Give me the strength to seek you.

For you help me to find you.
And you have more and more given me the hope of finding you.

Here I am before you with my firmness and my infirmity.

Preserve the first and heal the second.

Here I am before you with my strength and my ignorance.

Where you have opened the door to me, welcome me at the entrance.

Where you have closed the door to me, open to my cry.

Enable me to remember you, to understand you, and to love you.

Amen.

to live a life of purpose

Dear Father,

So often I am confused and discouraged about my life.
Help me to believe that I have a purpose and there is meaning to my life.

My self image suffers as I compare myself with my friends.
Bless me that I might have renewed confidence in you and myself.

I am prone to turn inward and not really think about others.
Please bring people and opportunities to me so that I can bless others.

I pray Lord, that you would help me to live a life that encourages others.
Teach me to be like Jesus as I serve in your kingdom.

Look upon us, O Lord,

Fill us with holy love,
and open to us the treasures of thy wisdom.

All our desire is known unto thee,
therefore perfect what thou hast begun,
and what thy Spirit has awakened us to ask in prayer.

We seek thy face,
turn thy face unto us and show us thy glory.

Then shall our longing be satisfied,
and our peace shall be perfect.

SONGS IN THE NIGHT

Psalms 42:8  "By day the Lord directs his love.  At night His song is with me!

Psalms 63:6  "On my bed I remember You.  I think of You through the night watches.  I sing in the shadow of your wings.  Your right hand upholds me."

Dear Heavenly Father, Gracious Lord, Comforting Spirt.  How wonderful that the night watches can be filled with songs, prayers and praises.  Instead of lying in bed worrying about tomorrow, we can meditate on your Love and Mercy and sing songs in the middle of the night.  What a blessing that is.  There is no special time for praise and prayer its our way of life.  Morning, Noon and Night.  Thanks you Father that you are with us at all times and in all places.  Amen

A prayer of peitition

Father, using Your word as a guide, I offer You my prayers concerning dedication to You.

Since I have been raised with Christ, I should seek the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. May I set my mind on the things above, not on the things on the earth, for I died, and my life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is my life appears, then I also will appear with Him in glory. (Colossians 3:1–4)

In view of God’s mercy, may I present my body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, which is my reasonable service. May I not be conformed to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of my mind, that I may prove that the will of God is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:1–2)

May I cast down arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of You, and take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)

He who does not take his cross and follow after You is not worthy of You. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for Your sake will find it. (Matthew 10:38–39) May I take my cross and lose my life for Your sake.

May I trust in the Lord and do good; may I dwell in the land and feed on Your faithfulness. When I delight myself in the Lord, You will give me the desires of my heart. I will commit my way to the Lord and trust in You, and You will bring it to pass. You will bring forth my righteousness like the light, and my justice like the noonday. (Psalm 37:3–6)

  Come, my children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Who is the man who desires life
And loves many days that he may see good?
  Keep your tongue from evil
And your lips from speaking guile.
  Depart from evil and do good;
  Seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
And His ears are attentive to their cry. (Psalm 34:11–15)
May I learn the fear of the Lord.

Show me Your ways, O Lord,
  Teach me Your paths;
Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation,
And my hope is in You all day long.
Remember, O Lord, Your compassions and Your mercies,
For they are from of old. (Psalm 25:4–6)

O Lord my God, may I fear You, walk in all Your ways, love You, and serve You with all my heart and with all my soul. (Deuteronomy 10:12)

  Father in heaven,
  Hallowed be Your name.
  Your kingdom come;
  Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give me today my daily bread,
And forgive me my debts as I also have forgiven my debtors.
And lead me not into temptation,
But deliver me from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. (Matthew 6:9–13)

Pause here to express any additional personal requests, especially concerning growth in Christ:

Greater desire to know and please Him
Greater love and commitment to Him
    Grace to practice His presence
Grace to glorify Him in my life

Dear Lord,

I am reminded that Paul wrote to us about contentment.

In his writing he told us that he learned to be content.

I wonder if learning to be happy and being content is related?

Teach us to smile with our children and friends.

Bless us that we might find joy in unexpected places.

THE VALLEY OF VISION

O HOLY FATHER, thou hast freely given thy Son,
O DIVINE SON, thou hast freely paid my debt,
O ETERNAL SPIRIT, thou hast freely bid me come,
O TRUINE GOD, thou does freely grace me with salvation.

Now I know but a small portion of what I shall know,
Here in part, there in perfection,
Here a glimpse, there a glory,
To enjoy thee is life eternal, and to enjoy is to know,
Keep me in the freedom of experiencing thy salvation continually.

Dream in our hearts - An engagement prayer

Lord, I’m—we’re—so excited! It all seemed to happen like a whirlwind. The proposal—the yes!—and now we’re engaged!

Thank you so much, Lord, for each other, for us, for the way you’ve made us, for the way you brought us together, for our future lives together—as one.

Lord, as we dream dreams for the future may we learn together and grow in our respect and love for each other.

In all our excitement about our love may we draw closer to each other and even closer to you, too. May we not forget you, heavenly Father, the giver of life and love.

We commit to you our future, Lord. Guide us as we plan the wedding and as we share our thoughts and hopes—and our fears—with each other.

Thank you for our excitement, Lord God. In Christ’s name, we pray.
                                                                                               Amen.

TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
This is God's gracious command
In all your ways acknowledge Him
So shall you dwell in the land.

Trust in the Lord, O troubled soul
Rest in the arms of His care;
Whatever your lot, it mattereth not
For nothing can trouble you there.

Trust in the Lord, His eye will guide
All through your pathway ahead,
He hath redeemed and will keep,
Trust Him and be not afraid.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart.

A prayer of confession

-----

David is constantly confessing sin in the Psalms. We know that he is not saying that one must be holy in order to pray; otherwise, no one would ever pray. In fact, being a sinner is one of the prerequisites for entrance into the kingdom of God. Jesus said that He did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance. Looking again to the Lord’s Prayer as a pattern, we note that confession is an integral part of prayer. Without the confession of sin, says 1 John 1:9, there is no forgiveness of sin.

My mentor, Dr. John Gerstner, told of an occasion at one of his meetings when a woman announced to him that she had not sinned for more than twenty years. Dr. Gerstner said that he felt sorry for her because that could only mean she had not prayed in more than twenty years, at least not in the way the Lord told us to pray.

I am not suggesting that the more we sin, the more qualified we are for prayer; that obviously would be a false conclusion. But confessing sin, asking for forgiveness of our “debts” or “trespasses,” is an integral part of the practice of prayer, as outlined by our Lord Himself. In fact, the more godly we are, the more devout we will strive to be and the more painfully aware of our sin we will be. It is much the same as walking toward a mountain. The closer we get to that mountain, the bigger it appears.

R.C. Sproul

-----

Psalm 51:1–15 (ESV)

Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your steadfast love;
        according to your abundant mercy
            blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin!
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
            and blameless in your judgment.
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
Purge me with hyssop,
    and I shall be clean;
        wash me,
and I shall be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
    O God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.

a prayer to be transformed

Behold, Lord, an empty vessel that needs to be filled.

My Lord, fill it.

I am weak in the faith; strengthen me.

I am cold in love; warm me and make me fervent, that my love may go out to my neighbor.

I do not have a strong and firm faith; at times I doubt and am unable to trust you altogether. O Lord, help me. Strengthen my faith and trust in you.

In you I have sealed the treasure of all I have.

I am poor; you are rich and came to be merciful to the poor.

I am a sinner; you are upright.

With me, there is an abundance of sin; in you is the fullness of righteousness.

Therefore I will remain with you, of whom I can receive, but to whom I may not give.

Amen

I think that something has to go but I do not know what to do.

Help me to discern how to let go of my cares and burdens.

Open my eyes to habits that are binding me up.

Enlighten my mind to new ways of living.

Lead me in ways that bring refreshing and joy.

I entrust you with my life, bring light in my darkness.

I confess you as my Lord, I commit my heart and life to you.

Amen.

teach us to smile

Dear Lord,

Life can be hard and happiness so difficult to find.
Teach us to smile anyways.

Interactions with friends and family often discourage us.
Teach us to smile anyways.

Struggles with health and finances sometimes weigh us down.
Teach us to smile anyways.

In all things and at all times help us to rise above our troubles.
Teach us to smile anyways.

Bless us to focus on things that are eternal and
Teach us to smile anyways.

Amen.

FULL OF GRACE

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you will know how to answer every one.  ~Colossians 4:6

O Lord, out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.  May my heart overflow with worship.  May my conversation be a feast of life.  May Christ be the bread and Your Spirit the wine.  May praise be the fruit and grace and salt.  May love be the table and wisdom the candle.  May I always be prepared to feed anyone who hungers for the hope that I have in Christ.  In Your precious Name I pray.  Amen.

A prayer when struggling spiritually

  Lord Jesus Christ,
  in the garden you struggled
  with accepting the sacrificial path.
  Sustain us in our struggles
where the way is hard and beyond what we can bear.
  Send your Spirit
to strengthen our resolve to do your will,
to drink the cup that you drink
  and find in our cross the way of life and peace;
to the glory of God the Father. Amen.
