a prayer when we are angry

Dear God,

I am angry and I am struggling.

You see the frustration I am carrying.

You know exactly why I feel this way.

Please help me to deal with my desire to react out of pain.

Help me to take a moment to breathe and to think.

Guard my mouth so I do not speak words I will regret.

Bless me with wisdom that I might see clearly and calmly.

Give me the grace to let go of what I cannot control.

Grant me the courage to handle what I can with kindness and patience.

Thank you for being my safe place when I am overwhelmed.

Amen

a prayer for when we are afraid

Be gracious to me, O God ... have mercy on me ... oppression and depression seems to camp all around me ... I need you Lord.

I put my trust in you ... I am afraid ... I lean into your words for courage ... in you I trust ... I shall not be afraid ... what can flesh do to me?

All day long evil seems to lurk trying to injure me ... bombarding me with nasty thoughts ... trying to tempt me and cause me to fall ... but you are faithful Lord.

You have kept count of my trials ... saved my tears and written them in your book ... you understand me and are touched by my pain.

This I know ... you are for me ... I believe your promises to me ... in you I trust ... I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?

I will offer thanks to you today ... for you have delivered my soul from death ... yes, my feet from falling ... that I may walk before you in the light of life.

Praise you Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Dear God,

In these anxious times, I bring my worries to you in prayer.

Calm me and cover my fears with your peace.

Help me to trust that you are with me and involved in my life.

Bless me with your love and wisdom.

Give me the courage to speak peace to the storms raging.

Give me the strength to face each new challenge with faith.

prayer for grace in trials

Merciful Father,

Hear me for Jesus' sake.

I am sinful even when I am closest to you.

Your grace has given me faith in the cross

by which you have reconciled yourself to me

and me to you,

drawing me in by your powerful love,

seeing me as innocent in Christ

though I am guilty.

Giver of all graces,

I look to you alone for strength

for it is hard to practice what I believe.

Please disarm me from the things

in which I have trusted,

and give me no strength but strength in you.

I need your grace to sustain me when I fall

when the enemy's darts inflame me and the shield

I hold up to protect myself easily drops from my hand.

Let each trial teach me more of your peace,

more of your love.

Increase your grace by the work of the Holy Spirit

as I cannot preserve or improve them without

your constant work in my heart.

May I walk humbly in dependence upon you.

as we persevere

Dear Lord,

I will remain restless, tense, and dissatisfied until I can be totally at peace in your house. But I am still on the road, still journeying, still tired and weary, and still wondering if I will ever make it to the city on the hill.

With Vincent van Gogh, I keep asking your angel, whom I meet on the road: “Does the road go uphill then all the way?” And the answer is: “Yes, to the very end.” And I ask again: “And will the journey take all day long?” And the answer is: “From morning till night, my friend.”

So I go on, Lord, tired, often frustrated, irritated, but always hopeful to reach one day the eternal city far away, resplendent in the evening sun.

There is no certainty that my life will be any easier in the years ahead, or that my heart will be any calmer. But there is the certainty that you are waiting for me and will welcome me home when I have persevered in my long journey to your house.

O Lord, give me courage, hope, and confidence.

Amen.

I have been recovering from ankle surgery for three months now. Progress is not what I expected. I have had a few painful relapses. I am back in a wheelchair today. It reminds me of how so much of my journey has been about learning to wait on the Lord.

So Lord, I pray that you might help we who hurt, as we wait. Help us to remember that you are not the author of our pain. Nor are you hesitant to help us. Give us eyes to see you in our pain. Help us to see past our frustrations.

We affirm Father, that you are kind and you are loving. You are the answer and not the problem. We testify that we have known your blessing and experienced your compassion. Endow us with divine patience as we wait.

a prayer in time of trouble

Lord, in every need let me come to You with humble trust saying, "Jesus, help me."

In all my doubts, perplexities, and temptations,
Jesus, help me.

In hours of loneliness, weariness, and trials,
Jesus, help me.

In the failure of my plans and hopes; in disappointments, troubles, and sorrows, Jesus, help me.

When others fail me and Your grace alone can assist me,
Jesus help me.

When I throw myself on Your tender love as a father and savior,
Jesus, help me.

When my heart is cast down by failure at seeing no good come from my efforts,
Jesus, help me.

When I feel impatient and my cross irritates me,

for those with addictions

Father,

I prayer for the many who struggle with addictions, including many who are among Your people. I pray that You will intervene in the lives of these who feel trapped in these behaviors. I pray that they may turn to You for assistance and that You may lead them to whatever human assistance they need. I pray that they may be set free to trust and follow You.

Father,

We are weak. We need your strength and your healing as we struggle through this life. We can stand firm in knowing you are with us, and that you are strong. We need your power to help us get through and to show your glory to the unbelieving world.

So may we be humble in our weakness, knowing you provide all we need. You provide the way through, and you are our only source of true power and strength in this world.

Father, the comfort and encouragement we have through Jesus identifying with our weaknesses, suffering, sorrows and sickness is truly not only healing but also enabling. You give us the strength and hope to carry on, living in faith, trusting your presence with us every day.

a prayer to die to self

Father,

I've never been fond of how Jesus calls us to take up our cross. Not because I don't want to follow him, but because the cross is a symbol of death. And that means I know you have called us to die to ourselves.

Dying daily. That's what you've called us to do. A complete and total surrender to all that we want and desire if it does not line up with your will. A death to our sinful self and a birth to new life in you. But see, sin is fun. So that's why we struggle.

But Father, we also acknowledge that you know better than us. Help us to trust in who you are, and not in what we do. We must trust in all that you have done and not in all that we want to do. Help us to see what you'd have for us... that is so much great, bigger, richer then we could ever want. But also, help us see it that way: as bigger, better, and richer.

Help us to die to ourselves and live victoriously over sin in a new life. Help us to want what you want for us. Help us to walk strong in this truth.

We praise you, O Lord, for all that you have done and all that you will do. For all that you are and all that you are helping make us become.

Faith Tested by Fire

Father, the flames of devastation may turn our possessions into ashes, our hopes into tears, and our dreams into nightmares, but our faith in you will enable us to persevere through it all.

1 Peter 1:6-8 (ESV)
⁶In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, ⁷so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. ⁸Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,

Thank you Father that our tested faith gives evidence of our love for you, our belief in you and our joy in you, that surpasses understanding. It is faith with a reason though it doesn’t know all the whys.

a prayer for the weary

Heavenly Father,

We lift up your Name today. You are the Lord of lords, the Most High God. You are the God of Peace, our Shepherd, and the God who provides. May your Name be exalted.

We also know that you are the God of power and strength. And we sometimes struggle to feel your power and strength. Our hearts are broken, our bodies weary, and souls hurt. We struggle to find hope in the world without it. We struggle to find strength within ourselves.

But we know, O God, that you are the one who gives us strength. When we are weary, you provide. When we look to the world for hope, it will fail us. Yet we can always find hope in you.

We praise your Name, Jehovah-Jireh, the Lord who provides. Please give us strength for
our weary souls.

Grace

Heavenly Father,

We come before you today trying to understand more deeply the profound nature of your grace.

Everything about our lives is based on what we earn. Except for your grace. And it's so hard for us to live in the reality of this grace when all we want to do is help out... participate... earn it.

But we can't, Father. We may know this, but we struggle to live like we really believe it. And so we come to the foot of your cross.

We come before you today filled with hope that you can reach deep without our minds and bring the truth of your freely given grace into our hearts.

It cost Jesus everything. But costs us nothing.

May this undeserved favor, unconditional love, and powerful forgiveness always be at the center of our faith.
