Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Humble King

Please join me in singing and praying this beautiful song/prayer..

Oh kneel me down again
Here at Your feet
Show me how much You love
Humility

Oh spirit be the star
That leads me to
The humble heart of love
I see in You

Cuz You are the God of the broken
The friend of the weak
You wash the feet of the weary
Embrace the ones in need
And I want to be like you Jesus
To have this heart in me
You are the God of the humble
You are the humble King

Oh kneel me down again
Here at Your feet
Show me how much You love
Humility

Oh spirt be the star
That leads me to
The humble heart of love
I see in You

You are the God of the broken
The friend of the weak
You wash the feet of the weary
Embrace the ones in need
And I want to be like You Jesus
To have this heart in me
You are the God of the humble
You are the humble King
You are the humble King

You are the God of the humble
You are the humble King

John Wesley's Covenant Prayer

I am no longer my own, but thine.
Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee,
exalted for thee or brought low for thee.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal.
And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
thou art mine, and I am thine.
So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth,
let it be ratified in heaven.

Amen

Whiter Than Snow

Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Psalm 51:7b

Dear Lord,
I need a clean heart. I need to love You more that You can love others through me. Pour Yourself into my heart, Lord. Teach me how to love with a pure heart, no stipulations, no strings attached. I know it will hurt, so I pray You will give me strength to go on when the going is tough, and I thank You now, Lord, for being there. I can't do it without You.
Amen

our jesus, who art in heaven...

Growing up, I prayed to God the father. I even gave the father credit for the crucifixion – after all, he gave us his one and only son – the same we look up to Abraham (and not Isaac) in the Genesis account.

As my relationship with Jesus has grown in recent years… I welcomed his accessibility and willingness to be my brother, but still loved, feared and prayed most to God the father.

Coming to know Jesus Christ as my Lord and almighty God has only come more recently. Will you pray with me today?

Jesus Christ, who art in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

Amen

In my daily reading through the Bible this year, I am in the book of Deuteronomy and reading about the stone tablets, the Ten Commandments.

With this thought in mind, I will share a wonderful pray from the Worship Bible from this Scripture.

"O Holy God, write Your Word on the tablet of my life. May it flood my heart and shine its light of truth into every dark corner of my conscience. May it enlighten my eyes and be the filter through which I see all thing. May it fill my mind so that all my thoughts will be captive to obedience to Christ. May it direct my steps into Your good, pleasing and perfect will. May it guide my hands into the work of the ministry. May it guard the doorway of my life so that all of my comings and goings may pass under the scrutiny of Your divine wisdom. May Your Word, O God; be the constant employer of my spirit, soul and body."

Amen

For all those in prison

For the past several years, I've written to a few inmates. At times I've been able to encourage them in the faith, as they've encouraged me in mine.

A hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday of this week for one of them, a young man named Jeff. I hope you will join with me in praying that God will sustain him and his family over the next few days and will bring about the best possible outcome. And pray for all those in prison, that the light of Christ will penetrate the darkness and despair behind those bars.

In the words of Timothy Dudley-Smith:

We pray, our Father, for those whose freedom has been taken from them: for all who suffer imprisonment, whether for crime or for conscience' sake; for all whose vision of your world is seen through bars, and in whose heart the lamp of hope burns low. God of mercy, give them help, according to their need, and hear our prayer for Jesus Christ's sake.

Monday's Prayer - 02-22-2010

We lift up our hearts to you in humble adoration and praise, our dear Father in Heaven. We give you thanks for the privilege of entering into your presence through the power of and in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

...As the traffic rushes by at a break-neck pace on the highway outside...
...As the father who ought to know better scolds his unruly child, with language that reminds me of my days as a sailor...
...As the couple across the restaurant argues about their plans for the evening...
...As manager belittles one of her subordanates...

...I give you thanks, dear Father, for the inner peace which Your Spirit imparts to those who take refuge in You. May more-and-more people learn of your desire to impart mercy to all who draw near your throne of grace.

Help us, dear Father, to find ways of making a difference in the lives of others through the things we say and do. Please help the masses of humans who surround us who seem to be living lives of not-so-quiet desperation to find peace...to find Jesus...to find Jesus in each of us...to find Jesus in me.

Please forgive me, dear Lord, for the times when I have seen others only from a human perspective. Help me to see them as you see them--not for what they are, but for what they can be through your power and grace. Help me to live tranparently so that others can see the change you have made in me.

In the mighty name of Jesus,
Amen

Let all that I am praise the Lord

Let all that I am praise the Lord;
with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.

Let all that I am praise the Lord;
may I never forget the good things he does for me.

He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.

He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies.

He fills my life with good things.

My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

The Lord gives righteousness and justice to all who are treated unfairly.

The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.

He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.

The Lord has made the heavens his throne; from there he rules over everything.

Praise the Lord, you angels, you mighty ones who carry out his plans,
listening for each of his commands.

Yes, praise the Lord, you armies of angels who serve him and do his will!

Praise the Lord, everything he has created, everything in all his kingdom.

Let all that I am praise the Lord.

Amen

Ways to Pray during Lent

This week Beliefnet posted a piece by Therese J. Borchard called 12 Ways to Pray During Lent. Some of the ways on her list might resonate more with Roman Catholics but some I think resonate with many of us who pray. Here are a few ways to pray that made her list:
  • Say Thank You: Gratitude, they say, is the highest form of prayer. ... During Lent, I try to pay special attention to all the small, wonderful things around me: that my kids aren't using diapers anymore, that they don't have disabilities, that my husband works around the corner and can come home for lunch.
  • Sing the Verses: In the church bulletin recently, I read that "singing is praying twice." So if I sing a refrain three times, that's like saying six prayers, right?
  • Yell like Heck: Indeed the prophets and saints were not always in the habit of simply saying, 'Thy will be done.' They often fought, challenged, squirmed and begged as a way of saying 'Thy will be changed!'"
  • Repeat one Word: During several months when I felt suicidal, I repeated four words: "Jesus, be with me." And that mantra was enough, at times, to beat back my fear and sadness.
  • Laugh: I believe that God wants us to laugh because laughter heals in ways traditional and alternative medicine can't.
  • Eat and Drink: When we do this during Lent, we celebrate Jesus and each other just like he did at the Last Supper. I especially like this form of prayer since eating and drinking come so naturally to me.
  • Give Something Up: Why must we give up something we enjoy to be enlightened? I don't know. But I do think the lines of communication between God and me are better on the days I've abstained from a desired object.
Therese goes go into more detail. Feel free to check out her entire list here.

Love and Forgiveness

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13

Dear Lord,

It has been a week of many emotions. There are people I need to learn how to love, and others I need to forgive. I have come to realize that without challenges to the boundaries of love and forgiveness, I would never learn to love or forgive like Jesus does. When others make loving hard, I must let You love them through me. When others are cruel or offensive, I am forced to forgive in a whole new way and find I need You to do that through me also.

Thank you, Lord, for stretching the boundaries and for putting prickly people in my path. Help me to realize every day that these challenges come from You.

In Jesus' name,
Amen

let's sing tonight

In the shadow of your wings I take refuge, till harm pass by…

There are many people I know who are taking refuge tonight. Refuge from sickness, lonliness, unemployment, addiction, anxiety. But tonight Lord, instead of praying for help, or comfort or aid... I just feel like singing your praise.

My heart is steadfast, O God,
my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and make music.
Awake, my soul!
Awake, harp and lyre!
I will awaken the dawn.

I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations;
I will sing of you among the peoples.
For great is your love, reaching to the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let your glory be over all the earth.

(From Psalm 57)

Will you sing with me tonight?

Amen

AN EVENING PRAYER

As I have mentioned before one of my favorite resources for prayer apart from the Word of God, is a little prayer book I have, published in 1941 called A Diary of Private Prayer by John Baillie. Here is an evening prayer from my prayer book. Written in "Old English" but speaks to my heart with an air of reverence.

"O God, the Father of all mankind, I would bring before Thee tonight the burden of the world's life. I would join myself to the great scattered company of those who, in every corner of every land, are now crying out to Thee in their need. Hear us, O God, and look in pity upon our manifold necessities, since Thou alone art able to satisfy all our desire.

Especially do I commend to Thy holy keeping:
All who tonight are far from home and friends;
All who tonight must lie down hungry or cold;
All who suffer pain;
All who are kept awake by anxiety or suspense;
All who are facing danger;
All who must toil or keep watch while others sleep.

Give to them all, I pray such a sense of Thy presence with them as may turn their loneliness into comfort and their trouble into peace.

Oh most loving God, who in the Person of Thy Son Jesus Christ didst manifest Thy love to man by relieving all manner of suffering and healing all manner of disease, grant Thy blessings, I pray to all who in any corner of the world are serving in Christ's name:

All ministers of the gospel of Christ;
All social workers;
All missionary workers abroad;
All doctors and nurses who faithfully tend the sick.

Accomplish through them Thy great purpose of goodwill to men and grant them in their own hearts the joy of Christ's most real presence.

And to me also, as I lie down, grant, O gracious Father, the joy of a life surrendered to Christ's service and the peace of sin forgiven through the power of His Cross.

Amen

A prayer for Lent

Tomorrow we begin the season of Lent, the 40 days preceding Easter. Lent is a penitential season, a time of preparation for the coming of our Lord. It is a time for spiritual housecleaning, for looking at ways we can empty out things which are not of God so that we can make more room for him to enter in to our lives more fully.

This prayer from Saint Augustine seems an appropriate way to enter into the spirit of Lent:

O Lord,
The house of my soul is narrow;
enlarge it that you may enter in.
It is ruinous, O repair it!
It displeases Your sight.
I confess it, I know.
But who shall cleanse it,
to whom shall I cry but to you?
Cleanse me from my secret faults, O Lord,
and spare Your servant from strange sins.

Amen

A Psalm for Monday Morning

Reading through the psalms gives me the sense that there are many "voices of prayer." Sometimes the psalmists cry out to the Lord from the miry pit. At other times the night watchman offers a quiet but confident praise prayer to the God whose glory resonates in the heavens.

The voice of Psalm 5 seems to be that of earnest appeal, which grows out of pressing needs. Perhaps this is why I am often drawn back to this psalm our psalm for Monday morning. Here are the words of this psalm with the prompters which I have written in my Bible:

vs. 1-3 — An Appeal...

O Lord, hear me as I pray;
pay attention to my groaning.
Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God,
for I pray to no one but you.
Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord.
Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.

vs. 4-6 — An Acknowledgment...

O God, you take no pleasure in wickedness;
you cannot tolerate the sins of the wicked.
Therefore, the proud may not stand in your presence,
for you hate all who do evil.
You will destroy those who tell lies.
The Lord detests murderers and deceivers.

vs. 7-10 — An Assertion...

Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house;
I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe.
Lead me in the right path, O Lord,
or my enemies will conquer me.
Make your way plain for me to follow.
My enemies cannot speak a truthful word.
Their deepest desire is to destroy others.
Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave.
Their tongues are filled with flattery.
O God, declare them guilty.
Let them be caught in their own traps.
Drive them away because of their many sins,
for they have rebelled against you.

vs. 11-12 — An Affirmation

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them sing joyful praises forever.
Spread your protection over them,
that all who love your name may be filled with joy.
For you bless the godly, O Lord;
you surround them with your shield of love.

__________________________
May our lives be blessed through the reading this psalm and...
  • Appealing to the Lord to hear and answer our cries for help
  • Acknowledging our need to humble ourselves before the Lord
  • Asserting that God's mercy allows us to enter into His presence
  • Affirming that God favors and blesses those who take refuge in Him.

Prayer for those Snowed In

~from the folks at Beliefnet..

"God, we pray for the protection and health of the millions of people impacted by these major winter storms on the east coast of the United States. Give everyone wisdom in how they travel and work to deal with this major disruption. Guard the health of those driving and those working to dig out. Give peace and wisdom and rest where it most needs to be... In Jesus..."

Praying the Love Chapter

A prayer offered to celebrate this Valentines Weekend..

Lord we ask you to fill our hearts with your love.. we pray that you would baptize us with love as you did on that day of Pentecost so many years ago.. we ask for a prophetic blessing of love.. and the ability to mix faith and love in everything we do.

We ask you Lord to fill us with a love with a love that is patient and kind.. a love that does not envy or boast and is not arrogant, rude, selfish, irritable or resentful.

We ask you Lord to fill us with a love that rejoices with the truth.. a love that bears all things.. a love that believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.

We ask you to fill us with your kind of love because that love is everlasting.. that kind of love hangs in there when all other love stops.

We praise you Father for the gifts of faith, hope and love.. but especially for love.. because it is the greatest gift.. because of love you gave your only begotten Son.. help us to love with that kind of love.

Amen

Dear Lord,

You are my Father, and you love me. You desire only what is best in my life. Help me to rest in You, to abide in You, and to trust in You.

Shine the light of Your word on my path that I might follow in Your footsteps instead of making my own way in the world.

Pour Your love in and through me that I might love those you bring into my life. Sometimes it is hard, Lord, especially when they give so many reasons to be hurt or angry instead.

Teach me to judge the thoughts and intents of my own heart, to give to You that which causes my heart to become hard and callous, and to become pliable in Your Hand.

May I learn to trust you more each day, to thank you for each blessing you bestow, and to cherish every breath.

May I treasure every loved one, forgive their mistakes and misdeeds, and remember that even they won't be around forever.

And, Lord, as we make our way back home, please give us traveling mercies and let Your presence be with those whose hearts are hurting so deeply today. Help them to know Your love and comfort.

Amen

my favorite prayer

From Psalm 25.

To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul; in you I trust, O my God.

Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

A PRAYER FROM DANIEL

"Give ear, O God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. O Lord, listen! Oh Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For your sake, O my God, do not delay because your city and your people bear your Name" (Daniel 9:18-19)

Gracious Father, we praise You for Your eagerness to answer prayer. You do so not because we are righteous, but because You are merciful. And in Your great mercy You hear, You see, You forgive and You act mightily. It is for Your own sake that You answer the prayers of Your people. Thank You, Father, for Your saving love and compassion.

Amen

I don't know what to say.

We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

Romans 8:26-27

Lord, there are times when I struggle to find the words to express what I want to say to you. And there are times when I'm "running on empty" and simply have nothing to say.

But you know my heart, Lord, even when everything inside and out seems dark to me. And since I don't know the will of God for me just now, I ask you to pray for me.

Amen

You reign Lord! You are robed in majesty! You are clothed with strength and power!

Your kingdom is established Lord.. it is eternal! Your throne is established from everlasting to everlasting!

You are greater than a tsunami Lord and more powerful than a tornado.. great and mighty are you Lord!

Your word is trustworthy Father.. strength proceeds from the scriptures.. your word Lord stands forever!

We trust you Lord Jesus Christ! You are worthy of our praise!

A Prayer for Comfort

Dear Heavenly Father,

I thank you today for family, both far and near. I pray that this day You would comfort the hearts of those who are hurting and that You would make Your presence felt and known. I ask that You would give us wisdom as we seek to comfort and encourage souls that know You not, patience as we wait, and a willingness to follow wherever You might lead.

I know, dear Lord, You make no mistakes and for this I am grateful. No one takes a final breath without the knowledge of a Holy God. I am humbled by Your awesome love.

In Jesus name,
Amen

hannah’s prayer

Yesterday my dear friend Anna shared news that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer—the fourth person who has shared such news with me this year.

While the challenges, dangers and anxieties of this illness are tremendous, I took comfort in the fact that each of these women found out early and were able to take immediate action. Two of my friends are already “cancer survivors” and the others are well on their way.

Nearly 200,000 women will find out that they have breast cancer this year. Tens of thousands will die from this disease. Today, I hope you will join me in prayer for these women and their families. That their heart will rejoice, and that they will delight in deliverance.

Hannah’s Prayer (1 Samuel, 2: 1-10)

Then Hannah prayed and said:
"My heart rejoices in the LORD;
in the LORD my horn is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
for I delight in your deliverance.

"There is no one holy like the LORD;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.

"Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,
for the LORD is a God who knows,
and by him deeds are weighed.

"The bows of the warriors are broken,
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry hunger no more.
She who was barren has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.

"The LORD brings death and makes alive;
he brings down to the grave and raises up.
The LORD sends poverty and wealth;
the humbles and he exalts.
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
and has them inherit a throne of honor.
"For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's;
upon them he has set the world.
He will guard the feet of his saints,
but the wicked will be silenced in darkness.
"It is not by strength that one prevails;

those who oppose the LORD will be shattered.
He will thunder against them from heaven;
the LORD will judge the ends of the earth.
"He will give strength to his king
and exalt the horn of his anointed."

Amen

BEGINNING THE DAY WITH PRAYER

"Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul." Psalm 143:8 (NIV)

Just as when you nourish you body with a hearty, healthy breakfast, feeding your soul with God's grace will renew and refresh you for hours ahead. One of the best ways to start your day is to pray, and praying Scripture is always a blessing.

My prayer today from Psalm is this:

"Dear Lord, as I wake this morning, my first thoughts will be of you and your unfailing love. I have put my trust in you, by receiving your Son, and the amazing gift of salvation. Today, Lord I need your help in showing me the way you want me to go today, and the actions you want me to do. Beginning my day with you is wonderful, I lift my hands and soul to you in praise."

Amen

Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth
passes into the stomach and is eliminated?
But the things that proceed out of the mouth
come from the heart,
and those defile the man.

- Matthew 15: 17 - 18
 ___________________________

Lord, as I read these words... and listen to my own words... I see that my words reveal my inner brokenness, and I realize that I am far from the person you call me to be. But I need your help, Lord. I cannot become Christ-like without Christ-help.

Please, Father, use the power of your Holy Spirit to cleanse me from sin and to make me more like your Son.

Amen

Praying Psalm 93

You reign O Lord.. you are robed in kingly majesty.
You are clothed in power and have put on strength as a belt.
You have established the world.. it exists to serve your purposes.
Your throne is established from eternity past.
You have no beginning and have no end.

You, O Father, are our eternal sovereign!

The floods of trial have lifted themselves up, O Lord.
These floods speak to us and lift up their voice and roar against us.
Yet you are mightier than the thunders of many waters!
You are mightier than the waves of the sea!

The Holy Spirit is mighty to save!

Your promises are absolutely trustworthy Father.
Though all is decaying - you O Lord are without fault.
Holiness adorns your house, O Lord, forevermore.
We are your people and we live to serve you.

Praise you Lord Jesus Christ!

Amen
