a prayer to accept and love our neighbors

Gracious God,

You are the creator of all life and you love each of us.

Help us to love and accept those who think differently.

You have blessed us with such a rich diversity in our human family.

Open our hearts and minds to understand those who follow different paths.

Take away our fear, pride, and judgment of those not like us.

Give us gentle words, listening ears, and open minds.

Bless us with a shared desire for peace, love, and the common good.

Amen.

a prayer for patience in hard times

Lord of Wisdom and Grace,

I am anxious and find myself struggling so much.

Grant me patience as I navigate the challenges I encounter today.

Fill me anew with your life giving Spirit of grace and mercy.

Help me to slow down and gather grace to live in what I face today.

Bless me to take a breath and respond to the challenges of life.

And as I wait, bless me as I treat people with grace and kindness.

Help me to take heart, acting with love in all that I do.

Amen

a prayer for being overwhelmed by chaos

O Father who ordered all creation,
O Christ through whom all things were formed from nothing,
You know me:
my love of sequence and order,
of places for things and things in their place.

And you also know, O Holy God, that this whole world has tended toward decay, decomposition, withering and moldering.

All is turned and upturned, untidied, a mess of human making, a consequence of an old curse, a wearing out, a winding down, a slow slide toward entropy and gravity, a ruin and wreckage ever accumulating— beyond our power to put right again.

And I see it  in the hard realities of this world today
in territories with by political and ethnic conflicts,
in violent incursions disrupting some hard-won peace,
in the stubborn refusal of prejudice to be purged from our public spaces,
in the hope
-shattering inescapability of disease and loss and grief.

In the midst of this chaos, and all chaos,
let me learn to call upon and lean upon your name,
O Godfor you are the One who ordered all things in the beginning.

You are the One who is making all things new.
You are the only One who can sustain me in my struggle with all that is not yet put right.
You are God Our Peace who alone can speak a deep and lasting calm to the chaos of this world,

and to the chaos in my own heart and mind.

Grant me peace amidst this world's relentless disorder, O Christ.
Still my mind and strengthen my hands.

Keep despair far from the door. Be my present help when I sigh at the sight of constant disarray of this world.

Give me peace of mind and heart to release long-held breath and gritted teeth,
and in your mercy grant me ordered spaces where I can be at ease.

Send me to spaces like a corner that is not in need of neatening work. Help me lean into the relationships that nourish more than drain, and remind me of the grace of unexpected beauty that sustains my wearied soul.

Refresh my faith. Refresh my hope.

Amen.

You are with me, and I lean on You.

a prayer to move beyond fear

Dear Lord,

I come to you today feeling overwhelmed by fear and anxiety.

I confess that I have been trying to carry my burdens on my own.

I ask that you quiet my racing mind and soothe my anxious heart.

I surrender every "what if" and every fear to you, laying them at Your feet.

Please replace my fear with a peace that passes all understanding.

I choose to trust in your power rather than my own worries.

Remind me that you are with me, that you are my refuge and strength.

You have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and discipline.

Give me courage as I walk forward, trusting that I am never alone.

In Jesus’ name, I pray.

Amen.

Thank You for the blessing of your presence.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

a prayer for the unsettled

Heavenly Father,

In this second week of Advent, I know the focus is on the word "Peace" but honestly, my heart doesn't feel very peaceful right now. I'm being pulled in many directions, and my heart feels very unsettled.

I know that the peace the angels spoke of  (“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”- Luke 2:14) isn't about horizontal earthy peace, but about the vertical peace we have with you...  but I really wish there was horizontal earthy peace right now.

Lord, help me rest in the peace Jesus brought when he came as a baby, a peace in my relationship with you. I am so thankful that I am no longer at war with you because Jesus has covered all my sin. May this peace sink down so deep in my heart that I become an agent of peace in this world.

I heard the bells on Christmas Day

Their old, familiar carols play,

And wild and sweet The words repeat

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Amen.

a prayer to find contentment

God of all Peace,

I come to you seeking wisdom and guidance for my life.

I struggle with wanting more and feeling discontent with my circumstances.

Help me to learn contentment and to release control of my life.

Bless me to not lean on my own understanding but trust your Spirit within me.

Remind me that peace and fulfillment come from you and not from the things.

Help me to focus on your care, your goodness and your provision in my life.

I will rest in you. You are greater than my pain and my problems.

Amen

Let Nothing Disturb You

I have found that Saint Teresa's call to focus on the goodness of God when I need to discern helps me fight the demons of despair, self-rejection, and fear, and has overcome the powers of darkness with the power of God many times. I have often prayed the prayer of Saint Teresa, “Solo Dios basta, God alone is enough,” when I have needed to discern whether what I was hearing and experiencing was of God or not.

Praying these words slowly and out loud can help me enter into God's presence, where there is peace and certainty that God is always with me and loves me.

Let nothing disturb you
Let nothing frighten you.
Those who cling to God
will lack nothing
Let nothing disturb you
Let nothing frighten you
God alone is enough.

Henri Nouwen

“Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous.”
 - Joshua 10: 25

“Let nothing disturb you, nothing frighten you, all things are passing, God is unchanging. Patience gains all; nothing is lacking to those who have God: God alone is sufficient.”

a prayer to remember our fallen

God of all mercy and peace,

On this Memorial Day weekend, we give thanks.
For those who courageously laid down their lives for our freedom.

For the families and friends who suffered and lost so much.
May the examples of their sacrifice inspire in us a selfless love.

Bless the families of our fallen, and fill their homes and their lives with strength.

Embolden us to answer the call to work for peace and justice.

Motivate us to seek an end to violence and conflict around the globe.

We ask this in your name.

Amen

for peace in life's storms

Steer the ship of my life, good Lord.

To your quiet harbor, where I can know peace in life's storms.

That I might have time to reflect and to find discernment.

Show me the way that I should take in my journey forward.

Help me to have clarity of mind that I might know where to go.

Give me the strength and the courage to choose the right course.

Bless me to know that you are with me even when life's waters are rough.

In your name I shall find comfort and peace.

Amen.

a prayer for peace

Heavenly Father,

Your good and gracious heart for Your people is the reason we are able to have peace.

While the world is in chaos, when violence is the norm and fighting is expected, we long for peace between all those created in Your image. When thank you for the peace Jesus brought between us and You. Glory to God in the Highest!

Show us ways to be at peace with others, give us hearts for loving and not fighting with those we disagree with, and give us an open spirit for peace to reign in our hearts at all times.

Amen.

a prayer of reflection

Dear Lord,

Help us to take time to rest and relax.

Teach us to value meditation and time alone.

Bless us to think deeply and not just react to life events.

Open our eyes to what is important in the world.

Connect us to others and help us to build substantial relationships.

Together, lead us to bring peace in a world of turmoil.

Make us to be instruments of peace in our neck of the world.

To you we turn, praying for your will to be done in us.

Amen.

a prayer for peace

O God, Creator of the universe, who extends your paternal concern over every creature and guides the events of history to goals of salvation, we acknowledge your Fatherly love when you break the resistance of mankind and, in a world torn by strife and discord, you make us ready for reconciliation.

Renew for us the wonders of your MERCY; send forth your Spirit hat He may work in the intimacy of our hearts, that enemies may begin to dialogue, that adversaries may shake hands and peoples may encounter one another in harmony.

May all commit themselves to the sincere search for true peace which will extinguish all arguments, for charity which overcomes hatred, for pardon which disarms revenge.
