as we navigate holiday grief

Dear Father,

We come to you with heavy hearts as we navigate this holiday season.

We know that you are with us in our sadness.

We pray for Your comfort and peace in the midst of our sorrow and loss.

Wrap us in Your love and strength, and remind us that we are not alone.

Please bring us courage to face each day with hope.

Grant us grace that we might find hope and healing, even through the pain.

For we who mourn, let your presence be our solace.

And let our memories of our loved ones be a source of peace.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

A prayer when your pet has died

WHEN YOUR PET HAS DIED

Lord God and Father of all,
I thank you for the gift of life you gave
my friend and companion.
I thank you that you know how much
I am missing them. I know you
understand my loss, pain,
and sense of bereavement now that they have gone.

Thank you for their liveliness
and brightness, and for their company.
Thank you for the memories I have
and for the many years of happiness
my friend brought me.

If there were a heaven for pets,
I believe my friend would be there now.
Please comfort me in my loss.

Amen.

a prayer in times of sorrow

Lord of all hope,

In times of darkness ...
may we see your light on the path ahead.

When the road we walk is confusing ...
may you always hear your voice within.

When times are really hard ...
may hardness not make our hearts hard.

When the shadows fall and the way is sad ...
may we always remember that we do not walk alone.
Thanks for being in our lives God.
Amen.

a prayer for grief and loss

Dear Heavenly Father,

In our grieving hearts, we lay this hurt before You. Our souls feels heavy with the weight of loss. We are  pilgrims in the valley of sorrow, yet in this dark journey, we am not alone. For You are with us, Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Father, Your love is unchanging and unending. You have promised to never leave nor forsake us, and we find solace in this promises. As tears flow we are reminded of the love of Your Son, Jesus, who wept at the loss of His friend, Lazarus. This divine compassion reaches out to us in our grief, affirming our pain as yet offering a comfort that only You can provide.

We confess, Lord, that there are moments when our faith trembles, when the shadows seem too deep, and our hearts ache profoundly. In Your grace to steady us in this uncertainty. Your grace and peace understanding is our refuge. In the middle of this storm, we cling to the cross where Jesus paid the  price for our salvation. This is a beacon of hope that illuminates this dark path grief through this valley of sorrow.

Amen.

a prayer when we feel forsaken

My God,

I feel so alone, lost and forsaken.

I am struggling to find you in the midst of my pain.

Speak to me Lord, help me to know that you are with me.

Help me to trust you even when I don't understand.

Give me the strength to keep seeking you and your ways.

Open my eyes to how you are working in my life.

Lead me towards a life of love, peace and hope.

In your hands I place my life.

a prayer in dark times

O Lord, God of my salvation,

I cry out day and night before you.
Let my prayer come before you.
Incline your ear to my cry!

My life is troubled with remorse,
My mind wanders to past times.
I am a man who is in need of strength.

Yet this I recall and I have hope.
You have rescued me from darkness.
You have shown me the light of your love.

I no longer walk in darkness. I walk as your child.

You overwhelm me with waves of your goodness Lord.
I can see your hand in my life providentially guiding me.
You are helping me to become a better man.

Though all abandon me, you remain faithful..
Though life is sad sometimes, I still find joy in you.
You cause my heart to sing, and my soul to soar.

Every day I will call upon you, O Lord.
Each morning I will spread out my hands to you in worship.
You are worthy Lord Jesus!

You work wonders God, and I praise you!
I will declare your steadfast love until I die.
You are faithful and your mercy is great!

I cry to you this morning as my prayer comes before you.
O Lord, you have embraced my soul.
You show your face to me in kindness.

You are good Lord. You have filled me with hope and not despair.
Because of your love I will embrace the day.
Because of your grace I will overcome.

Faith, hope and love surround me like still waters all day long.
They water my soul and feed my heart with good things.
I will rejoice in in you my Lord, my God and my Strength.

Amen

a prayer to yield my life and change

Loving God,

I want to yield up my life into Your hands for my life seems to be falling apart at the seams and I am desperate. Oh Lord, I don’t know which way to turn nor do I know what to do. I so need your strong hand in my life.
I am coming to You confessing my need for You in my life, and pray that You will forgive me for my pride in trying to be the god of my own existence. Lord, I have made myself the center of my life and not You. I pray You would help me to change. Please transform me and bring good from my trials.

Lord, I don’t really know how to “let go”. I don’t really know how to do to give You greater influence in my life, but I am coming to You in humility to confess my need of You in my life. Lord, I pray that Your love, grace and mercy would lead, guide me and help me to let go of my past.

Lord, I also ask that You would teach me how to submit my life to You. Show me how to abide in You day by day, and instruct me how to live in spirit and truth. Help me Lord, to submit my life to You in every way, and to become the person You would have me be.
Thank You Lord, that You have not given up on me. I ask You to teach me Your way from this day forward. In Jesus' name I pray.

Amen.

a prayer for difficult times

Dear Father,

I pray that you will turn our weeping into dancing.

That you will give us a reason to not just smile but to laugh again.

That you will see us through difficult seasons this year.

And that you will comfort us in all ways and at all times.

I ask for your blessings for all who are suffering.

We bless you and give you thanks.

Amen.

as we mourn senseless deaths

God, our hearts are broken with pain at the senseless deaths caused by gun violence. Families mourn, children live in fear, and some in our nation respond by arming themselves with more guns with greater capacity to end life. Our disconnection and alienation has caused some to turn to guns for protection and safety.

We ask that you touch our hearts with your love, heal our brokenness, and turn us away from violence toward peace. Help us to transform our own hearts and to seek peaceful ways of resolving our differences. Let our hands reach out and connect with those who feel alone, those who live in fear, and those suffering from mental illness.

Let our voices be raised asking our legislators to enact gun laws to protect all in our society, especially those most vulnerable. Let our pens write messages demanding change while also scripting words of hope and transformation. We ask this in the name of the God who desires that we live together in peace.  Amen

for a grieving heart

The patriarch Job lost 10 children in one day.

His story is a tale of deep grief and sorrow.

He spoke of wishing he had never been born.

He debated with friends about "Why".

In all this it is written that he did not sin.

Lord help us to know that it is ok to grieve.

Give us peace in midst turmoil and anger.

Send friends who will comfort and encourage.

Make us aware of those hurting among us.

Bring hope to us as our heart grieves.

Amen

for peace after suicide

God of hope, we come to you in shock and grief and confusion of heart. Help us to find peace in the knowledge of your loving mercy to all your children, and give us light to guide us out of our darkness into the assurance of your love, in Jesus Christ our Lord.

God our strength and our redeemer: you do not leave us in this life nor abandon us in death. Hear our prayer for those in despair, when days are full of darkness and the future empty of hope. Renew in them your sustaining strength for we believe that there is nothing in all creation that can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Merciful God, hear the cries of our grief, for you know the anguish of our hearts. It is beyond our understanding and more than we can bear.

Amen

a prayer for hospice patients

A friend is receiving hospice care and is traveling the last days of her life. Would you please join me in prayer for her and all those who are climbing these final steps?

God, thank you for being with us right now.

We confess that we don’t understand why things happen the way they do.

We don’t understand why illness comes into our lives, but we do know that you walk every path of life with us.

Remind folks that are in the end stages of life that you are walking with them right now.

Remind them that you love him, no matter what they are going through.

I also pray for their family.

Give them your strength as they care for their loved one.

God, we thank you that you never leave us, that you never forsake us, but you love us.

We trust you, and pray this in your name.

Amen.

a brokenhearted prayer

God, you care deeply for brokenhearted people.
This is a promise you make: You are close.
We pray for all those who are crippled by broken relationships.

Our hearts take the blow of disappointment.
We feel crushed because our hopes are dashed.
God, heal broken hearts.

We cannot fix our own wounds. But you can.

If pieces of our heart have been lost, or are held captive by another,
recover them and bring them back to us and miraculously “put us back together”
so that our heart is whole again.

You are a mender of broken hearts.
We ask for this miracle,
in the name of Jesus. Amen.

a prayer of remembrance

Leavenworth National Cemetery
As we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy every day, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of your son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Please hold our servicemen and women in your strong arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and your presence as they stand in the gap for our protection. We also remember the families of our troops. We ask for your unique blessings to fill their homes, and we pray your peace, provision, and strength will fill their lives. May the members of our armed forces be supplied with courage to face each day and may they trust in the Lord's mighty power to accomplish each task. Let our military brothers and sisters feel our love and support. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer For Those Who Mourn

Father, we pray for those who are mourning the loss of loved ones in the recent school shootings. Grant them your comfort and peace. Also be with those who were injured. Give them healing and recovery and give them peace and comfort as well.  Amen

a prayer of mourning

Father,

You are the God of all comfort, the God who brings peace to hearts, the God who has compassion on us. You are a great and powerful God, who knows every hair on our head and every thought in our minds. You know us intimately, O God. For you love us that much.

Today we lift up those who've lost their loved ones in the tragic shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue. Hold them close, Father.  Help them grieve, wipe their tears, and give them strength.

Death was never part of Your plan, and persecution of others because of their race is not Your will, either. We acknowledge that all people are made in your image, O Lord, and worthy of our respect and love. We pray for all those who harbor hatred in their heart. May they soften towards all that they hate; transforms their lives and hearts to be more like You.

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. (Psalm 139:1-6)

In Jesus' Name,

Amen

deepest grief

Lord,

Father, you are so faithful to us. So giving and strong. You are worthy of our time, attention, love, and worship. Only you, Father. Only you.

We come with hearts who love you but also love the world. We know you are all-knowing and powerful, all-loving and gracious, yet we chose to love other people and other things more. This is quite often the cause of our heart ache, and Lord, we turn to you in our sorrow.

We are sorry for impatience, temper, deaf ears, and loose tongues. In our days of deepest grief, we often don't see how much you love us. You are truly the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. Thank you for teaching us about you in our grief, and how to share comfort to those also grieving. Help us to to not assume we fully understand your timing or reasons. Help us to understand and believe that you know best.

Help us to trust in who you are and not in who we think you ought to be.

Amen

A Lament

Father,

I feel broken today. I am wrecked by the ravages of the Fall. Sin is breaking my heart - the sins of my own and the sins of others against me and the sins of others against others.

This just isn't how it's supposed to be.

But You know that, I suppose. For You are the Creator of the universe and it was never designed for this sin. That's on me. On us. We've broken shalom with You and these are the consequences: Hurt and pain.

O Lord, how long shall I cry for help,
and you will not hear?
Or cry to you “Violence!”
and you will not save? (Habakkuk 1:2)

How am I to press on, Father? How am I to understand what faithfulness means in the midst of this brokenness? Teach me, Lord, to not despair. Teach me, Lord, to find hope.

But the Lord is in his holy temple;
let all the earth keep silence before him. (Habakkuk 2:20)

With gratitude, O Lord, help me to find Your peace. Help me to see all the ways in which You are redeeming and rescuing this world. All the ways You are working in the hearts of Your people. Help me to find hope in You.

God, the Lord, is my strength;
he makes my feet like the deer's;
he makes me tread on my high places.(Habakkuk 3:19)

Amen
