Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Prayer for Mercy

Father, have mercy on us. Many are sick, while others are grieving. We are at a loss as to how to react. There is much information that is untrue, and there are many who are using tragedy for their own purposes. Help us to seek your wisdom. Show us how to love others through this. Strengthen our faith. Amen

I MUST TELL JESUS

I must tell Jesus all of my trials
I cannot bear these burdens alone;
In my distress He kindly will help me,
He ever loves and cares for His own.

I must tell Jesus all of my troubles;
He is kind, compassionate Friend;
If I but ask Him, He will deliver,
Make of my troubles quickly an end.

Tempted and tried I need a great Savior,
One who can help my burdens to bear;
I must tell Jesus, I must tell Jesus;
He all my cares and sorrows will share.

Father God, how the words of this old hymn comfort my soul.  We all need someone to tell our troubles to, especially in this time of isolation.  Who better than Jesus Himself.  Only You have all the answers for a troubled and fearful world.  Lord, reach down and comfort your people, and those who don't believe, open their eyes to see that You alone can calm those fears and bear our burdens.  We love and trust You.  Amen.

I Know Who Holds My Future

Lamentations 3:22-24 (HCSB)

22  Because of the LORD’s faithful love we do not perish, for His mercies never end. 23 They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness! 24 I say: The LORD is my portion; therefore I will put my hope in Him.

Psalm 16:5 (HCSB)
5  LORD, You are my portion and my cup of blessing; You hold my future.

Thank you Father that, as I face the uncertainty of tomorrow and the anxiety that often accompanies it, there also comes a peace that defies human frailty and reality. Your faithful love and mercies never end and give hope and assurance for the future, for all who trust in you. So I can joyfully sing with Alison Krauss, and The Cox Family:

“I don't know about tomorrow
I just live for day to day
I don't borrow from the sunshine
For it's skies may turn to gray

I don't worry o'er the future
For I know what Jesus said
And today I'll walk beside Him
For He knows what lies ahead

Many things about tomorrow
I don't seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know who holds my hand.”

Thank you Father for your faithful love and mercy that comes with each new day. Thank you also that with each new day comes the promise of a wonderful future. In the name of Jesus, our Hope and Savior, Amen!

a blessing for those who serve

Blessed are you, Lord, God of mercy, who through your Son gave us a marvelous example of charity and the great commandment of love for one another.

Send down your blessings on these your servants, who so generously devote themselves to helping others.

Grant them courage when they are afraid, wisdom when they must make quick decisions, strength when they are weary, and compassion in all their work.

When the alarm sounds and they are called to aid both friend and stranger, let them faithfully serve you in their neighbor. Amen

a prayer in times of crisis

God who made us all,

Our healers are exhausted, God.
Give rest to those who care for the sick.

Our children are bored, God.
Grant extra creativity to their caregivers.

Our friends are lonely, God.
Help us to reach out.

Our pastors are doing the best they can, God.
Help them to know it is enough.

Our workers are jobless, God.
Grant us the collective will to take care of them.

Our fellow parents are losing their minds, God.
Bring unexpected play and joy and dance parties to all in need.

Our grocery workers are absorbing everyone's anxiety, God.
Protect them from us.

Our elderly are even more isolated God.
Comfort them.

We haven’t don’t this before and we are scared, God.

I don’t even know what else to pray for.

Amen

a prayer of trust

Father,

Great story maker, story creator, story writer, we long to know what You are up to right now.

We are wrecked by the ravages of the Fall, for sickness and death were never part of Your plan when You created this world. We sit in extreme brokenness right now. Broken systems, broken lives, broken hearts, and cry out, because we know this is not how it's supposed to be.

What are You doing, Father?

When we don't know, guide us to what we do. Your word tells us the truth of who You are:

You are faithful.
You are powerful.
You are personal.
You are present.
You are truth.
You are holy.
You are merciful.
You are just.
You are all-knowing and all-seeing.
You are love.
You are eternal.
You are good.

Help us say these things all day long, O Lord. These things we know to be true. And it's because we know these truth that we must learn to trust. You've never failed us yet.

Teach us to trust.

Amen

Prayer for Those on the Front Lines

Father we pray for health care workers. For doctors, nurses, first responders, and those who work as support staff. Protect them from the Corona Virus. Boost their immune systems so it has no effect on them. Grant them strength as they battle this plague.  Amen

JESUS PAID IT ALL

JESUS PAID IT ALL

I hear the Savior say
"Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all."
Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

Father God, I marvel at Your patience with us.  As You saw the crowds and felt their rage, You responded with a heart of grace, and I am amazed at the strength of Your self-restraint.  Likewise, I marvel, Lord, at Your ability to care for the suffering women in the midst of Your own infinitely worse suffering.  May I learn to be more like You - showing patience to those who would desire to do me harm and mercy to those who hurt.  I love You.  Amen.

PETER'S SIFTING

Have you ever been sifted by Satan?

  • Satan can't sift a believer without getting God's permission to do so.  The Father is in control, even in those moments when pain and heartache of life feel out of control.  Keep your focus squarely on God, not on the trial of the enemy.
  • Satan may sift to destroy the wheat, but God allows the sifting in order to rid us of the chaff in our lives.  What Satan intends for evil, God intends for good.  What Satan seeks to do to bring harm, God uses to produce purity.

When you are being sifted, remember what Jesus said to Peter.  "But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers."  Luke 22:32

How precious that our Lord and Savior prays for us.   Don't you know His prayers are answered.

MAN OF SORROWS

Living Lord, the judge of the earth and the God of truth, thank You for accepting injustice so that I could escape the justice and judgement that I deserved.  Thank You for allowing lies to be told about You so that You could forgive the truth about me.  Thank You for embracing the mistreatment of humanity so that You might pour out Your grace upon me.  Upon us.  Thank You for becoming the man of sorrows so that I might be able to experience joys forevermore.  Thank You.  Amen.

coming back to you

Lord, I sometimes wander away from you. But this is not because I am deliberately turning my back on you. It is because of the inconstancy of my mind.

I weaken in my intention to give my whole soul to you. I fall back into thinking of myself as my own master. But when I wander from you, my life becomes a burden, and within me I find nothing but darkness and wretchedness, fear and anxiety.

So I come back to you, and confess that I have sinned against you. And I know you will forgive me." Amen

a prayer for wisdom in the face of fear

Jesus be with us all and bring the deepest peace as we learn to navigate this strange normal.

Replace fear with steady trust, panic with quiet soul rest, and loneliness with Your presence. Keep us from shaming one another for our feelings of fear, and give us the right words to respond to those who are scared. Teach us to be kind.

Remind us of the hope of Jesus Christ, and help us know we are not alone. Guide us to ways we can help and serve others while keeping them and ourselves protected. Help us not be selfish, to sacrifice for others, to check in on one another, and love our neighbor well.

Remind us, Lord, that faith and wisdom are the same side of one coin. Help us be wise in our preparedness, and still trust in Your providential care, for Your word says "The prudent see danger and take refuse, but the simply keep going and pay the penalty." (Proverbs 22:3)

We ask for you to:

Empower people to quickly discover and make a vaccine.
Provide for those who will lose income.
Strengthen our healthcare workers.
Protect the frail.
Swiftly heal those who are sick.
Give wisdom to our national leaders as they make difficult decisions.
Help parents at home struggling to keep their children busy due to school closings.
Convict employers to treat their employees well.
Slow the panic of hoarding items at the store.

Give us eyes to see what we can do to slow this virus and to help others who are in need

Amen

THE PATH OF HIS PASSION

"Then all the disciples left Him and fled" (Matthew 26:56)

As Adam learned, the God of the garden is the God of grace.
As Jonah learned, the God that is sovereign is also the God of the second chance.
As the disciples will learn, though they abandoned Christ, He will never abandoned them.

Lord Jesus, in the darkness, we try to hide from Your gaze, but Your eyes clearly see.  Expose our hearts when they move toward treachery and self-seeking.  Strengthen our hearts when we need to stand strong, and remind us of the perfect peace that comes when we rest in the matchless purposes of the Father's plans.  Remind us that we do not need the weapons of the world or even the armies of heaven to protect us --we need only the Shepherds powerful care.   Help us to trust You with all our hearts."  We love You, Amen.

prayer for a pandemic

May we who are merely inconvenienced, remember those whose lives are at stake.

May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable.

May those who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent.

May those who have the flexibility to care for our children when schools close remember those who have no options.

May we who have to cancel trip remember those who have no safe place to go.

May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market remember those who have no margin at all.

May those who settle for quarantine at home remember those who have no home.

As fear grips our country, let us choose love during this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, let us find ways to be the loving embrace to God and our neighbor. Amen.

prayer as an offering

This is one of my favorite prayer passages. It begins with an invitation to pray and to have others pray for you. It also speaks to prayers being answered.

In the middle of the passage it says "the prayer offered in faith". Have you ever thought of prayer as an offering?

The Old Testament is full of altar offerings but we seldom think of prayer as an offering. When we pray we offer our needs and indeed ourselves to the Lord in faith, believing that He hears, He cares and He answers.

We offer ourselves and our needs to you today Lord. Please answer according to your wisdom.

Have mercy on us. Amen

for those affected by the coronavirus

Dear Heavenly Father,

Many are concerned and afraid about reports of the coronavirus infecting people all over the world.

We ask that you would help us to be wise in our lives.

Open our hearts and our minds to understand how to respond to the crisis with faith and love.

We pray for nurses, doctors and all who are ministering to those who have contracted the virus.

We intercede for leaders of governments and corporations who are dealing with this issue.

Help everyone Lord to look to you for guidance and peace in the midst of this storm.

Teach us to face this virus with trust in you and your sovereignty.

for uncertainty

Most High God,

We praise You this day, Lord, knowing that You hold it in Your hands. You hold us in Your hands. Your strength and power are unmatched and Your compassion and mercy never fail. You made the moon to mark the seasons and the sun knows its time for setting. You make darkness and it is night and You made the sun for us to know when day is coming. In all things small and all things great, You are Lord of All. Of this, we are sure.

We still feel uncertain about a lot of other things in our lives.
When it seems like nothing good is happening, we are angry.
When it seems like You aren't moving, we feel stuck.
When it seems like things are falling apart, we feel unsteady
When it feels like the world is closing in, we want to run.
When it feels like everything is against us, we are fearful.

But You are for us.

When we feel this uncertainty, may we remember who You are. You have promised to make all things work for our good, and it's our prayer, Lord, that we learn to trust in Your goodness and Your faithfulness.

When we feel unsure of where life is taking us, help us to remember the one things that is certain: You.

Amen

THE TABLE

Living Christ, there is no altar on which to offer sacrifices and no need for them.  THE TABLE displays Your love, and the sacrifice of Your grace is pictured for our hearts to embrace.  Thank You for Your sacrifice.  Thank You for the cross.  Thank You for the crumbs of broken bread that reminds us of Your sufficient supply and for the cup that reminds us forever that You have kept Your promise to redeem us.  Remind us of our frailty and our dependence upon You.  Help us to respond to Your unspeakable gift with worship, love and gratitude and obedience ~~ that our hearts may display the grace You have freely given.  Amen

praying with confidence

I love this passage of scripture from the book of Hebrews. It says that we can present our prayers with confidence. What you may ask can we be confident of?

The answer is simple. When we pray we can be confident that we will receive mercy and find grace to help us. Notice that it did not say that our prayers would always be answered the way we prayed them - just that mercy and grace would be given.

This has been a hard week for me dear Father. I bring my hurting back to you. I bring Ann's health and healing to You as we both recover from falls. I bring all of my needs to you. I trust You with my needs. And thank You that You will give us grace and mercy. Amen

when we face disappointment

When we face disappointment, rather than wallowing in it, we can pray.

Lord, I don’t understand why all this has happened. But I do know you want me to keep walking, keep looking for you, keep remembering that it’s what I do with disappointment that matters. Help me…to surrender both my memories of the past and my hopes for the future to you. Amen.

help me to spread Thy fragrance

Dear Jesus,

Help me to spread Thy fragrance everywhere I go.

Flood my soul with Thy spirit and love.

Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of Thine.

Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Thy presence in my soul.

Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus.

Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as you shine, so to shine as to be a light to others.

a prayer for the difficult road

Heavenly Father,

This road before me looks pretty scary.

Aside from the uneven ground, the rocks, the tree branches in my way and no visable path, it's even scarrier that I can't see what's at the end of the road. I am unsure on my feet. Crawling seems like a terrible idea. I don't have the right gear to make this traveling safer, and I just don't want to do it.

I did not choose this path, but it is the path before me and I have to figure out a way through.

Father, remind me not to trust in myself as much as I trust You. Tell me to stop when I need to, and move forward when You ask me to. Help me to know where to look, where to step and when to jump, where to duck, when to run, and when to stop.

Though I do not trust the path itself, I pray to learn how to trust in the One who not only guides me in the path, but walks with me in it. Remind me to lean into and depend on all that You are and all that You have promised to do.

THE PATH

"After thirty years of walking with Christ, I don't believe I fully understand all that Christ suffered for me or what it means for Him to do that, but I find myself more determined than ever to try to embrace the cross that Christ embraced for me.  Join me in the journey of seeking Him, considering Him, worshiping Him --of walking with Him along The Path of His Passion.  I believe it will be worth it, for we will see Him -- and that is all that matters."
                                                                                   ~ Bill Crower

Father God, I pray this morning as I join Bill Crower in his devotional The Path of His Passion, to see Christ in a new and deeper way.  To follow in His foot steps as He makes His way to the Cross.  Help me to understand such love, and how very personal it is.  That He would endure the suffering and cross for me....and for the millions who will say "yes" to his invitation to life eternal.  I love You.  Amen.
