Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

teach me to grow old gracefully

Dearest Lord, teach me to grow old gracefully.

Help me to see that my community does me no wrong when gradually it takes from me my duties; when it no longer seems to seek my views. Rid me of my pride in all the "wisdom" I have learned. Rid me of the illusion that I am indispensable.

Help me in this gradual detachment from earthly things to grasp the meaning of your law of time. Teach me, in this turnover of work and workers, to discern a striking expression of life's constant renewal under the impulse of your providence.

And please, Lord, let me still be useful, contributing to the world of my optimism, adding my prayers to the joyful fervor and courage of those who now take their turn at the helm.

Let my lifestyle now become one of humble and serene contact with the world in change, shedding no tears for the past; making of my human sufferings a fit of reparation to all my brothers.

Let my leaving the field of action be simple and natural - like a glowing, cheerful sunset.

Lord forgive me if only now in my tranquility I begin to know how much you love me, how much you've helped me.

And now, finally, may I have a clear, deep understanding of the joyful destiny you have prepared for me, guiding my every step from the first day of my life. Lord, teach me to grow old.

a prayer for a new life

Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unconditional love.

Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.

Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean.

Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Help me to find my joy again that I might rejoice in you.

I invite you into my life - come into my heart Lord Jesus.

Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a loyal spirit within me.
Transform me as I surrender to your Holy Spirit.

Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you.

Help me to be the person that you want me to be.

for hope in the midst of uncertainty

Our Father and our God,

We confess our need of Your presence and Your guidance as we face the future.

In the midst of life’s uncertainties in the days ahead,
assure us of the certainty of Your unchanging love.

In the midst of life’s inevitable disappointments and heartaches,
help us to turn to You for the stability and comfort we will need.

In the midst of life’s temptations and the pull of our stubborn self-will,
help us not to lose our way but to have the courage to do what is right in Your sight, regardless of the cost.

And in the midst of our daily preoccupations and pursuits,
open our eyes to the sorrows and injustices of our hurting world, and help us to respond with compassion and sacrifice to those who are friendless and in need.

May our constant prayer be that of the ancient Psalmist:
“Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end”.

help me to rest

God of Goodness,

I come into your presence so aware of my human frailty
and yet overwhelmed by your love for me.

I thank you that there is no human experience that I might
walk through where your love cannot reach me.

If I climb the highest mountain you are there
and yet if I find myself in the darkest valley of my life, you are there.

Teach me today to love you more.

Help me to rest in that love that asks nothing more
than the simple trusting heart of a child.

guide us with your grace

I pray you'll be our eyes and watch us where we go.

And help us to be wise in times when we don't know.

Let this be our prayer as we go our way.
Lead us to a place.
Guide us with your grace.
To a place where we'll be safe.
I pray we'll find your light.

And hold it in our hearts when stars go out each night.

Let this be our prayer when shadows fill our day.
Lead us to a place.
Guide us with your grace.
Give us faith so we'll be safe.
We ask that life be kind as you watch us from above.

We hope each soul will find another soul to love.

Guide us with your grace.
Give us faith so we'll be safe.

help us to be wise

Father of All Wisdom

In this world of intellect, give us grace that we might value believing.

In this age of enlightenment, help us to see with inner vision.

When education is valued over experience, teach us to embrace faith.

In all ways and at all times, bless us that we might be wise instead of smart.

We ask to be like Jesus in all that we do and say.

Above all else, PRAY

Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything…” (Philippians 4:6)

Turn your worries into PRAYER.

Turn your heartaches into PRAISE.

No matter what you are facing today in your life, physically, spiritually, or mentally… the solution is to PRAY.

PRAYER will always lead us to the right place.

PRAYER will always calm our hearts. Bring peace to our spirits. Bestow healing to our souls.

When we see no way out. No answer at all.

And let God do the rest.

we are His

Your Word is solace for the sad, a firm rock for those looking for balance, and bread for the hungry. This is our reality, and we praise You. You've made promises you alone can keep, and you do not lie. No god is as near or as good, as merciful or as mighty as You - no matter the storm or season.

You created us and are redeeming us, all for Your glory. As Isaiah 43 says:

But now, this is what the Lord says—
he who created you, Jacob,
he who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
I give Egypt for your ransom,
Cush and Seba in your stead.
Since you are precious and honored in my sight,
and because I love you,
I will give people in exchange for you,
nations in exchange for your life.
Do not be afraid, for I am with you;
I will bring your children from the eas
and gather you from the west.

You summoned us by name, calling us to life in the gospel. You gave us a new name - "Mine."

There is no truth sweeter than the truth of Your great affection for us is our new name.

Help me to listen.

Teach me to do the deep listening to the sounds of my soul,

for so long that you can seem like background noise.

Today help me hear you anew.

help us to spread your fragrance

Dear Jesus,

Help us to spread your fragrance everywhere we go,
flood our souls with your Spirit and life.

Penetrate and possess our whole being so utterly
that our lives may only be a radiance of yours.

Shine through us and be so in us that every soul
we come in contact with may feel your presence in our soul.

Let them look up and see no longer us but only Jesus.

Stay with us and then we shall begin to shine as you shine,
so to shine as to be light to others.

The light, O Jesus, will be all from you.
None of it will be ours.
It will be your shining on others through us.

Let us thus praise you in the way you love best
by shining on those around us.

Let us preach you without preaching not by words,
but by our example by the catching force the
sympathetic influence of what we do the evident
fullness of the love our hearts bear to you.

chosen for God's story

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Peter 2:9)

By your grace you have freed us from a self-centered life... a life where we tend to give you only a bit part in our stories. Yet you have written us into your big story of every-nation redemption and cosmic renewal. We're not choice; we're chosen; we're not royal, but we've been reborn into the eternally royal family; we're holy in ourselves, but perfectly holy in Christ.

We are no longer our own, but instead are your possession. Hallelujah! And for the rest of our lives and throughout eternity, we have been given the privilege of declaring the power of your grace and the wonders of your love. We never want to go back to our silly little stories where we chase after personal peace and affluence! We desire your peace and your plan.

We want to live into the much bigger story you have for us.

God of love,

Help us to use the gifts you give us for the people who need us.

Help us to see their need and, inspired by your Son, reach beyond ourselves, beyond our institutions, to the very margins and bring all to you, the center.

May all we do be in preparation to serve more fully, seeking you in the world that we are invited to create with you.

Send your Spirit to keep us aglow with the desire for justice.

for strangers in foreign lands

Lord God,

Help us to remember those who tonight will go to sleep unfed and unwelcome, strangers in foreign lands, people who have fled for their lives and are far from their homes.

We lift up to you those who are escaping persecution and conflict, having fled death, torture or ruthless exploitation.

We remember those who have hopes for a better future for their children.

So many carry wounds, mental and physical. So many have suffered greatly.

Lord Jesus, give us more of your compassion for their plight, soften our hearts to their situation, and help us follow your lead in seeking justice and mercy on their behalf.

We pray for an end to the wars, poverty and human rights abuses that drive desperate people to become refugees in the first place.

We give thanks for people working in troubled countries and ask for more of your blessing so we can bring life, dignity and hope to those that remain.

We thank you that you are Lord of all the earth and all its people are loved by you.

We pray these things in the name of your Son who was himself born into the troubled life of a refugee.

a prayer for an enemy

You alone, Lord, are mighty; you alone are merciful;
whatever you make me desire for my enemies,
give it to them and give the same back to me.

And if what I ask for them at any time is outside the rule of charity,
whether through weakness, ignorance, or malice,
good Lord, do not give it to them and do not give it back to me.

You who are the true light, lighten our darkness;
you who are the whole truth, correct our errors;
you who are the true life, give life to our souls.

Fulfill my prayer, Lord, not only for my friends
and the enemies for whom I have prayed,
but distribute the healing of your mercy
wherever you know it may help anyone
and not be contrary to your will,
both to the living and the departed.

a prayer for loneliness: a lament

I struggle to feel understood.
    And when I am misunderstood,
I feel cutoff and isolated from those around me.

This isn't how is should be, right?
You created us for one another
and yet people don’t want to understand who I am.

Do you see me trying to fit in,
in a world and a system that doesn't seem to fit me?

It wasn't made for this... I wasn't made for this.

Do you see me trying?
Why am I trying to bend to everyone else's will
and why does it seem that no one is trying to bend to mine?

How long, O Lord?
How long must I feel lonely,
    boxed in?

When will I be able to feel like myself in a world that doesn't accept me?

Lord, please help them see me.
Reveal to them their own selfishness and shortsightedness.

Please help me in my sorrow to not become bitter.
Show how to offer grace to those who do not seem to know what to do with me.

to the lover of my soul

Ah, Lord God, Holy Lover of my soul,

When you come into my soul, all that is within me will rejoice.
You are my glory and the exultation of my heart.
You are my hope and refuge in the day of my trouble.

Set me free from all evil passions,
and heal my heart of all inordinate affections, cure and cleanse me within,
that I may be made fit to love, courageous to suffer, steady to persevere.

Nothing is sweeter than love, nothing more courageous,
nothing fuller nor better in heaven and earth; because love is born of God,
and cannot rest but in God, above all created things.

Let me love you more than myself, and love myself except for you,
and in you all that truly love you, as the law of love commands,
shining out from yourself.

Amen and Amen.

The Canticle of Creation

Most High, all-powerful, good Lord,

Yours are the praises, the glory, and the honor, and the all blessing,
To You alone, Most High, do they belong,
and no human is worthy to mention Your name.

Praised be You, my Lord, with all Your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun,
Who is the day and through whom You give us light.

And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendor;
and bears a likeness of You, Most High One.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
in heaven You formed them clear and precious and beautiful.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Wind,
and through the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather,
through whom You give sustenance to Your creatures.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Water,
who is very useful and humble and precious and chaste.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Fire,
through whom You light the night,
and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong.

Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Mother Earth,
who sustains and governs us,
and who produces various fruit with colored flowers and herbs.

Praised be You, my Lord, through those who give pardon for Your love,
and bear infirmity and tribulation.

Blessed are those who endure in peace
for by You, Most High, shall they be crowned.

Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death,
from whom no one living can escape.

Woe to those who die in mortal sin.

Blessed are those whom death will find in Your most holy will,
for the second death shall do them no harm.

Praise and bless my Lord and give Him thanks
and serve Him with great humility.

as we grow older

You know better than I, that I am growing older.

Keep me from the habit of thinking I must say something on every subject.

Release me from craving to straighten out everybody's affairs.

Make me thoughtful but not moody; helpful but not bossy.

Keep me sweet, that I might have a few friends at the end.

Keep from reciting endless details; give me help to get to that point.

Seal my lips on my aches and pains - help me to listen to people who hurt.

I pray for a growing humility when my memory seems to fail.

Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken.

Keep me reasonably sweet and easy to live with.

Give me the ability to see good things in people and places.

Dear Father of All Peoples,

It is hard to understand why people choose to discriminate based on skin color.

It is puzzling how folks fixate on, and judge, things like homosexuality.

It is odd that we choose to divide over religious preferences.

It is even harder to understand why we often choose hate over love.

So much of our behavior is based on years of bad training.

This INPOURING of Jesus into our souls comes from PERSISTENT, FERVENT, EAGER, and CONTINUAL  time on our faces or on our knees before Him.

If we desire to have the ability to POUR out OF Him, we must be FILLING ourselves WITH Him… and that will come from much personal and INTIMATE time of communion with our LORD.

PRAYER is the key to a successful spiritual life in Jesus. PRAYER unlocks the door to JOY and GROWTH.

We must stop neglecting this beautiful aspect of our Christian walk and begin spending much time in prayer. We will begin to see the FRUIT from this privilege immediately.

The amount of the OUTPOURING will only be a result of amount of the INPOURING….

an prayer of invitation

For the love shared
we are grateful
For provision and nurture
we are grateful
For kindness given
we are grateful.

For the sorrow we've caused,
we pray for forgiveness
For justices ignored,
we pray for forgiveness.

For the encounters with God today, in stranger and friend,
We bid you well.

For the encounters missed today,
We know that you always see us
even when we don't see you.

For now,
may we see you
in ways expected and unexpected.

We remember that you, Jesus of Nazareth,
lived through times of consolation and desolation.
And you walked into the lives of those people you met
inviting them to justice, truth, love and life.

May we be courageous.
May we learn.
May we love.

a prayer for extending the kindness of God to others

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,  he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
 Titus: 3-4-7

Dear Heavenly Father,

I praise you for being so gentle, kind, and patient with me. You don't love me to the degree I love others; you love me to the degree you have hidden my life in Christ, which is completely. This Good News is my peace, my hope, and my joy.

This kindness is always the basis for my repentance. Even as your kindness continues to lead me to repentance and leads me to more of Jesus, so I repent, Father. I repent of lingering resentments. Of withholding kindness, of holding on to hurts, and of not being quick to forgive as you have forgiven.

May I learn to rejoice in the grace you give to others, and not just in the grace you give to me. As I sit in the truth of your grace, Lord, show me the ways to extend this grace to others so that I may proclaim your glory.

A Juneteenth Prayer

Today, we commemorate the end of slavery in America. This day partially reminds us of the progress made. This day also partially reminds us of the progress we have not made. We celebrate the freedom of black lives in our nation. We grieve that we have not correctly reconciled racism in our nation.

You created each person in Your image. The two greatest commandments call us to love You with all our heart, souls, and minds; Then, to love our neighbor as ourselves. Your love for us motivates us to love each other. If we do not love each other, then ultimately, we have not experienced Your love.

As much as we commemorate and celebrate Juneteenth, we grieve this day. We mourn that our black brothers and sisters have not been loved as our neighbors. We mourn that our black brothers and sisters have been treated less than created in Your image throughout history. So, Lord, we confess our sins and repent. The healing and reconciliation we desire comes from the gospel.

On Juneteenth this year, we ask You to guide our nation. May the good news of the gospel motivate us to love each other. May the ideals of our words match the practices of our lives. May a fresh empowerment of Your Spirit unite us together. Give us eyes to see and ears to hear Your will and leading. Amen

a prayer for immigarnts

Merciful God,we pray to you for all the men, women and children who have died after leaving their homelands in search of a better life.

Though many of their graves bear no name, to you each one is known, loved and cherished.

May we never forget them, but honour their sacrifice with deeds more than words. We entrust to you all those who have made this journey, enduring fear, uncertainty and humiliation, in order to reach a place of safety and hope.

Just as you never abandoned your Son as he was brought to a safe place by Mary and Joseph, so now be close to these, your sons and daughters, through our tenderness and protection.

In caring for them may we seek a world where none are forced to leave their home and where all can live in freedom, dignity and peace.

Merciful God and Father of all, wake us from the slumber of indifference, open our eyes to their suffering, and free us from the insensitivity born of worldly comfort and self-centredness.

Inspire us, as nations, communities and individuals, to see that those who come to our shores are our brothers and sisters.

May we share with them the blessings we have received from your hand, and recognize that together, as one human family, we are all migrants, journeying in hope to you, our true home, where every tear will be wiped away, where we will be at peace and safe in your embrace.

when we have lost our spiritual thirst

Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.

We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
