Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Hannah's Prayer

In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD. And she made a vow, saying, "O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head." (1 Samuel 1:9-11)

I think that many of us can relate to Hannah's prayer. Often we come to God bitter and crying.. sometimes in our desperation we begin to bargain with the Lord. What is amazing about this story is that God condescended and answered her prayer for a son. So today maybe is a day that we can each interact with God in a real and meaningful way.

Father we come to you today stripping away the facade that often hinders our prayers and ask you to come and answer those prayers that we have asked for so long. Like Hannah we have so longed for you to come and answer. We are desperate for you to appear dear Lord. Come Holy Spirit.

Amen

Toys

Father,
I want to know Thee, but my coward heart fears to give up its toys. I cannot part with them without inward bleeding, and I do not try to hide from Thee the terror of the parting. I come trembling, but I do come. Please root from my heart all Those things which I have cherished so long and which have become a very part of my living self, so that Thou mayest enter and dwell there without a rival. Then shalt Thou make the place of Thy feet glorious. Then shall my heart have no need of the sun to shine in it, for Thyself wilt be the light of it, and there shall be no night there. In Jesus' name, Amen. ~A.W Tozer, "The Pursuit of God"

A Prayer for Wednesday

"Heavenly Father, Holy Spirit, and Lover of my Soul, fall afresh on me. Give me the mind of Christ so that I may know Your thoughts and dream Your dreams. Grant me vision to see things the way You see them. Fill my mouth with the Word of truth so that I may declare Your greatness to the world. I love you. Amen"

A beautiful prayer!

I remember hearing the name "Dag Hammarskjöld", but confess I knew little about him until I ran across this lovely prayer and was prompted to learn a bit more about him.

Hammarskjöld was called “the greatest statesman of our century" by President John F. Kennedy. He served as the second Secretary General of the United Nations and gained a reputation as a peacemaker. He is the only person who has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously; he died in a plane crash in 1961 at the age of 59. If the sentiments he expressed in this prayer helped to shape his life, I can understand why he gained a reputation as a man of faith and a man of peace.

You who are over us,
You who are one of us,
You who are also within us,
May all see you-in me also.
May I prepare the way for you,
May I thank you for all
that shall fall to my lot,
May I also not forget the needs of others.
Give me a pure heart-that I may see you.
A humble heart-that I may hear you,
A heart of love-that I may serve you,
A heart of faith-that I may abide in you. Amen.

God Grant Me

In the words of that famous prayer.. God grant me the:
  • serenity to accept those things that I cannot change. I so need your grace to live a life of surrender to the things that do not change. I need you perspective on my life.
  • courage to change the things that I can. The words of scripture strengthen me when you tell me that I can do all things through Christ. Embolden me to do your will today.
  • wisdom to know the difference. Thank you for the verse that directs me to ask for wisdom saying that you will give it to me. I need your wisdom today Lord.
In addition to these Lord please grant me the love to see life through your eyes. Help me to see those who are hurting and grant me the compassion that moves me to help.

Luke 9:13 "YOU give them something to eat."

"Dear Jesus, I am so prone to suggest other resources when someone comes to me in need" "See your local pastor; talk to a counselor; visit some social agency." But then I hear You words again: "YOU give them something to eat."

O Lord, give me the faith to respond with obedience to Your command. Take all that I have to offer, break it and multiply it for Your glory. Amen."

Mother Teresa at prayer

God, here I am, at your disposal, your child.
Use me to continue your loving the world,
by giving Jesus to me
and through me,
to each other and to the world.
Let us pray for each other
that we allow Jesus to love in us
and through us
with the love with which
his Father loves us. Amen.

On Being Thankful

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
Psalm 100:4

Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank you for my friend this morning and her list of thankfulness. Number four touched my heart and I am thankful too.
"I am thankful that in the midst of sorrow we can take comfort in the fact that the Lord has a good plan, even if we don't understand it or can't see how it will work out. He holds the universe in the palm on His hand and that includes the circumstances in my life."
Thank you for this new day even though the sky looks dark and threatening. Thank you for the rain which will surely fall and for the umbrella tucked safely between the seats in my van.
Amen

REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEONE TODAY

Some times God allows scars ~~so you can touch others. We have many examples in the Scriptures. If dependence on God is the object - Then weakness can be an advantage. The following men were weak at some point in their life...but look what God did in each of their lives.

Jacob was a liar ~ Father of Nations
Moses - had an anger problem ~ But he wrote the Law that we read in the first 4 books of the Bible.
David ~ adulterer and murderer ~ The greatest King and a Heart like God.
Paul - Persecuted Christians ~ Became the 12th Apostle and gave us most of the New Testament.
Peter ~ Denied Christ ~~ Became the Rock, and reached his world with the Gospel.

What are my weaknesses? Am I willing to depend completely on God, and let him turn my weakness in to my strength.

That is my prayer today. "Lord, let the object of my devotion be to depend on you in every circumstance. Lord, take those things I battle in my life, my weakness, and by Your power turn them into strength and stories that will touch others, and bring glory to your Name. I love You. Amen."

My prayer

In the days to come, Lord, help me to learn the true meaning of gratitude.

Remind me to be grateful not only for the "good things" in my life, but for the challenges and disappointments as well... for great lessons lie within them for hearts open to learn from You. And just as Your faithfulness despite suffering allowed You to return to the Father, so will mine, if I only remain faithful to You.

So Lord, I ask just one thing of you today: the ability to discern and follow You in all the places I go and all of the situations I face, today and always.

Amen

Unfiltered Prayers

One of the most famous biblical passages on prayer comes from the Sermon on the Mount in the seventh chapter of Matthew where Jesus says:
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. "Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
There are a few simple lessons that we can learn about prayer from these verses:
  • Be persistent.. do not give up.. sometimes we have to keep asking, knocking and seeking.. persistence is the heart of faith.
  • God filters our prayers and only gives us what is good for us.. this gives us confidence to pray unfiltered prayers.
  • We should pray for others in a way that we would want them to pray for us. We need each other's prayers.
Father we approach you today with love and thankfulness of heart. We thank you that you answer our prayers. We thank you that you answer them according to your great wisdom. We ask you to help those who are hurting around us.. comfort them dear Lord. We pray once again asking for those things we have been praying for so long.. with tears we ask you to save our loved ones.. we earnestly desire those who are sick to be well.. we pray trusting you to restore employment to our friends who have lost their jobs.. we ask you to bring your kingdom to earth today.. even in a small way.. we trust you.. we desire your will to be done in our lives as it is in heaven. To you be the glory.. we give you all of our praise.. we give you ourselves today. In the blessed name of you Son Jesus we pray.

Amen

A Prayer for Strength

Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.
Joshua 1:7

Dear Father God,
This day I pray for strength and courage that I might follow You and do Your will no matter what comes my way in life. I need You every day. I need You to show me what is right and good, to be my source of wisdom in deciding how to act and respond in any given situation, and to provide the strength and courage to do what is required.
I thank you for Your love and the constant presence of Jesus in my life.
In His name I pray,
Amen

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

"I come to the Garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses....."

My kitchen table is my "Garden Spot" where I meet the Lover of my Soul early in the morning.

Song of Songs 7:12 "Let us go early to the Vineyard (Garden)..... and there I will give you My love."

In the quiet of the morning,
I will worship Your Name.
I will lift my voice with singing
To praise You again.
For it fills my heart with gladness
That remains through the day.
In the quiet of the morning,
I will worship Your Name.
~Wes Tuttle (1988)

Dear Lord, wake me early in the morning, so I can rush to the Garden to meet You. I will lift my voice to praise Your Name, I will seek your guidance for the day.

A morning prayer

We give you hearty thanks, O God,
for the rest of the past night and
for the gift of a new day with
its opportunities of pleasing you.
Grant that we so pass its hours
in the perfect freedom of your service,
that at eventide we may again give thanks to you,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

An Independence Day Prayer

A prayer offered by US Senate Chaplain Frederick Brown Harris in 1943..

Our fathers' God and ours, on the birthday of national independence we confess our dependence upon Thee. Without Thee we are lost in spite of the overwhelming might of our national arms.

We thank Thee for those pilgrims of faith who came hither in their frail barque across mountainous seas and who stepped upon strange shores with the salutation to a new world, "In the Name of God. Amen." The Nation here established, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal has acknowledged that Name above every name and reverenced it, has built its altars, reared its temples, and raised its steeples, emblems of a faith that points to the skies and wings its sure and certain way to God.

Make that faith of the fathers, we pray, real to us in these tempestuous days. Save us from a freedom of speech so empty that we have nothing worth saying, from a freedom of worship so futile that we have no God to adore, from freedom from want and fear with no creative idea as to how to use our plenty or our security for the redemption of our social order and for the salvation of our own souls. Let all that is low and unworthy in us sink to the depths. Let all that is high and fine in us rise to greet the morn of a new day confident that the best is yet to be.

Amen.

Tossed and Troubled

But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.
Matthew 14:24-25

Dear Lord,

There are times when I feel as a ship on the sea, tossed, troubled, and alone. Help me, Lord, to hear Your voice above the sound of the wind and waves. May we never forget that You will come to us. When all seems dark and hopeless, You are not far away. No, we are never alone.

Amen
