a prayer for simplicity

Provider of food, Outfitter of lilies, Painter of sunsets, you offer us joy in the simplicity of your creation, and peace in your presence. Protect us from the allure of abundance. Help us find contentment, not in things, but in our relationship with you. Draw our attention to those who are in need and we can help. Give us today our daily bread, and help us to be thankful for it. Amen.

a simple prayer

This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. -Matthew 6:8 MSG

We invite You Father to come into our lives.

We believe that You are the answer to our needs.

We thank you that You care about our needs.

We need your presence in our lives.

Come Holy Spirit.

mentioning prayers

I love how simply the Apostle Paul speaks about prayer at times in his letters.

Consider these passages:

For God, whom I serve with my spirit by preaching the gospel about his Son, is my witness how constantly I mention you in my prayers at all times, -Romans 1:9-10

We always thank God for all of you when we mention you in our prayers. -1 Thessalonians 1:2

I never stop giving thanks for you as I mention you in my prayers. -Ephesians 1:16

I always thank my God when I mention you in my prayers. -Philemon 1:4

In a refreshing style he simply says that he mentions them in his prayers and often simply gives thanks for them. I think that it is good advice to pray simply and not get caught up in long and elaborate religious prayers that seem to instruct God about what He should be doing.

Some mornings when I pray I simply remember, before God, the folks on my heart and their needs - and express my thanks for them. I always seem to go away from those times refreshed knowing that my Heavenly Father has heard my prayers and sifted them in His loving hands.

I suggest that you take a moment. Close your eyes. Lay your hands, palms up, on your lap. And simply remember those who need your prayers. Give thanks for them. And make mention of them to the Lord like a child talking to their Dad.

Prayer can be so simple. I think that it is meant to be.

praying with confidence

I love this passage of scripture from the book of Hebrews. It says that we can present our prayers with confidence. What you may ask can we be confident of?

The answer is simple. When we pray we can be confident that we will receive mercy and find grace to help us. Notice that it did not say that our prayers would always be answered the way we prayed them - just that mercy and grace would be given.

This has been a hard week for me dear Father. I bring my hurting back to you. I bring Ann's health and healing to You as we both recover from falls. I bring all of my needs to you. I trust You with my needs. And thank You that You will give us grace and mercy. Amen

breath prayers

I love the concept of short prayers that we can say or think in our daily lives. To me they are cries from our heart that express, in simple terms, our deep desires. They create in us an awareness of God's presence and our connection to him. They are raw, heartfelt and in the moment. Here are a few examples that I have used:

"Come Holy Spirit" - An invitation into our lives.

"I need your grace" - We get stuck and we need help from above.

"Lord have mercy" - Sometimes life is so overwhelming and we strength.

"I am sorry. Forgive me" - Needed words of repentance and contrition.

"Here I am" - Acknowledging our willingness to be used by the Lord.

"I trust you" - Good words when things seem so out of control around us.

"Not my will but your will" - So hard to speak but so necessary when we struggle.

"Your kingdom come. Your will be done." - When we are confused and helpless.

open our eyes and our hearts

Our Father, who has set a restlessness in our hearts and made us all seekers after that which we can never fully find, forbid us to be satisfied with what we make of life.

Draw us from base content and set our eyes on far-off goals.

Keep us at tasks too hard for us that we may be driven to thee for strength.

Deliver us from fretfulness and self-pitying; make us sure of the good we cannot see and of the hidden good in the world.

Open our eyes to simple beauty all around us and our hearts to the loveliness men hide from us because we do not try to understand them.

Save us from ourselves and show us a vision of a world made new. Amen.

prayer for our daily needs

Give us today our daily bread. -Matthew 6:11

Back when I first accepted Christ I had a mindset that God would take care of me and I really didn't need to ask Him for my personal needs - don't remember that lasting too long. ツ

In this verse Jesus is telling us that God wants us to come to Him and ask him to provide us with what we need - food being one of our needs. Prayer of this kind is humble. It acknowledges our need of God to meet even the basic of our needs. It expresses a simple and basic trust in the Lord.

Our Father, often we take You for granted and do not acknowledge our need of you. We repent of our pride in this and in humility we ask you to meet the most basic of our needs - even things like bread. We ask you to give us a heart to each day ask for our needs. We echo Jesus' words and pray in unison: Give us today our daily bread.

Amen
