Father you teach us in your Word that
evil is any attitude or act that is contrary to your holy nature. We saw such
an expression of evil in the horrific terrorist attack on so many innocent
people in Nice, France. We pray for their families that have lost such dear
loved ones and for those recovering from their injuries. The wicked havoc that
can be caused by even one person is almost unthinkable. Yet we do not have to
be overcome by such actions. Lord you remind us how evil is overcome through
the story of the Good Samaritan.
30 Jesus replied with a story:
“A Jewish man was traveling on a trip from
Jerusalem to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his
clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.
33 “Then a despised
Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going
over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and
bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn,
where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper
two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher
than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’ 36 “Now which of
these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by
bandits?” Jesus asked. 37 The man replied, “The one who showed him
mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”
Father we know that good is not
impotent but powerful in conquering evil and that is why you remind us: “Don’t let evil conquer you, but
conquer evil by doing good.” Romans 12:21 (NLT)
Father you also admonish us to: “Follow only what is good. Remember that
those who do good prove that they are God’s children…...and those who do evil
prove that they do not know God.” 3
John 1:11 (NLT)
We pray this in the good
Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus,
Amen
