A Prayer to Celebrate the Miracle of Christmas

Dear Father,

Christmas began with the miracle of the Incarnation.

It seems that it is a time of hope, possibilities and optimism.

We thank you so much for giving us Jesus.

As we celebrate his miraculous birth, turn our hearts toward heaven.

Cause us to see you anew with hearts transformed by your Spirit.

Bless us to reflect your love and goodness to all around us.

You, O blessed Savior, are worthy of all honor and praise.

In this season we celebrate and glory in your Son.

To him belongs all praise.

In love we say amen. And amen.

A prayer for Advent to help restore our focus

  Come, Lord Christ,
to restore all that has been lost
  through struggle and fear,
  in sorrow and in pain.

  Come, Lord Christ,
to restore the balance of hope
for those oppressed and hungry for justice,
overlooked and counted of little worth.

  Come, Lord Christ,
  to restore to wholeness
  the image that is tarnished
  with sin and shame,
  neglect and distraction.

  Come, Lord Christ,
  in poverty and humility
to raise us to your eternal glory. Amen.

a prayer of hope

Father,

Hope.

It's the first word we often ponder during the Advent season and yet this year it feels strange to even think about hope with so much despair and conflict all around us.

So we lament. We cry out to You.

But in this, there is hope.

Because we wouldn't cry out to You if we didn't hope You would hear us. If we didn't hope You would fix what was broken and right what was wrong.

Lord help us see hope in a new way this Advent and Christmas season. Remind us to find hope in what You have done and what You are doing, and to find hope in the promises You have made for our future. Remind us that we are secure in our place as Your children and that our union with You is at Your gracious and loving hand.

Remind us that our hope is not in the things of this world, but in the person of Jesus Christ who will come again. For this, we wait and hope.

a prayer for clarity

Lord of Light and Clarity,

As we begin this season of Advent, fill our hearts with your beautiful light.
As seasonal candles are lit, bring the warmth of the time to our hearts.

In the darkness of uncertainty, remind us that your love never fails.

Bring clarity to our lives as we confess our trust in Your presence.

Help us to recognize the still small voice of your Spirit.

Bring grace to our lives as we lean into your presence in us.

Strengthen our hearts and minds for the days ahead.

Help us to carry your light and hope into the world.

Amen

A Prayer as we Prepare for Christmas

Lord Jesus, master of both the light and the darkness,
Send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.

We who have so much to do and seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day.

We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.

We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.

We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.

To you we say, "Come Lord Jesus!'

Amen.

Please bring us courage to face each day with hope.

Deliver Me from Slothfulness, Lukewarmness and Dejection (John Wesley)

Deliver me, O God, from a slothful mind, from all lukewarmness, and all dejection of spirit. I know these cannot but deaden my love to you; mercifully free my heart from them, and give me a lively, zealous, active, and cheerful spirit; that I may vigorously perform whatever you command, thankfully suffer whatever you choose for me, and be ever ardent to obey in all things your holy love.

John Wesley

Romans 12:11 (ESV)
11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.

Revelation 3:16 (ESV)
16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

on forgiving others

Father,

This week many of us will come to the table for holiday celebrations. And sometimes, Lord, it's hard for us to come to this table without hurt, baggage, and trauma around other at the table who've hurt us. It's hard to forgive those who haven't asked for forgiveness, or to forgive those who don't think they've done anything wrong.

May we be reminded that refusing to forgiving others is hard on our own hearts.

You've established forgiveness as a command, but a command for our good. When our sense of justice gets in the way, Lord remind us that release is good for our body, hearts, and souls.

We come with open hearts and open hands. Give us the grace to forgive all who have offended us. Give us the grace to let go.

Help us to walk in the forgiveness you have given us. Encourage unconditional love.

Teach us to forgive as we are forgiven.

 Amen.

giving thanks in every season

Heavenly Father,

You are the God of all seasons.

You are with me in my joys and in my sorrows.

I thank you for your unconditional love.

I am blessed to have you in my life in every season.

I am so thankful that you are working all things for my good.

I pray for the strength and faith to walk through every season.

I praise you in both glad times and in painful times.

I am trusting in you as I become more and more like your Son.

In every season, I give thanks to you and for you.

Amen.

a prayer of thanks in rough times

There is something healing about the giving of thanks. We acknowledge God's goodness when we give thanks to him in the midst of struggle and pain. We seemingly reach back to times of divine blessings when we remember what God has done in our lives. Such memories can be an anchor in the storm.

I can relate to times of pain when all I had was a memory of the goodness of God. There is something about a memory that can cause me to be thankful. When my parents passed on my memories of them caused me to be thankful for their lives. I think that it is helpful to give thanks to God in rough times.

With that in mind, I ask you to pray with me.

We remember what you have done in our lives Lord. And we give thanks.

For your presence in good times and bad. We give thanks.

For the people that you have placed in our lives. We give thanks.

For the ways that you work all things together for our good. We give thanks.

For the gift of your Son. Our hearts are filled with Thanksgiving.

Amen

May the Words We Have Heard Be Grafted in Our Hearts (George Whitefield)

Grant, we ask you, Almighty God, that the words which we have heard this day with our outward ears, may through your grace be so grafted inwardly in our hearts, that they may bring forth in us the fruit of good living, to the honor and praise of your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!

George Whitefield

a prayer for mental peace

O God, the One who has set us free - the One who is our peace:

We seek the strength of your Spirit, that we may live in a more deep and powerful union with you.

May Your faithfulness be a source of comfort for us as we live in the reality of a world, a community - and even our own hearts - that struggle to thrive in the midst of loneliness, political upheaval, financial battles, health concerns, broken relationships, and the continued deep divide between people with different beliefs.

Teach us to give grace when we don't understand.

Give us eyes to see those who are drowning in despair.

Give us hearts to help, and feet that are ready and able.

May Your hope overcome despair,  may Your love be felt by those who feel far away from it, and may Your provision come to those who need it. Grant that we may gain courage to love and understand each other, and live with mercy toward those that need Your help and our help. May the Great Comforter - the Holy Spirit - wash over each one of us this day and every day forward.

 Amen

Dear Lord,

Grant me flexibility, the ability to bend without breaking.

Enable me to find the grace to adapt to change with a peaceful heart.

Help me to be less stubborn and more open to new experiences.

Bless me that I might trust you when my plans go sideways.

Open my heart that I might find joy in unexpected moments.

And guide me to release rigidness and be more responsive to You.

In all things I will praise you and seek your will.

A prayer to be of use in my generation (by William Wilberforce)

That I really may be of use in my generation’

‘Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.’ Psalm 71:18

I have a vast multiplicity of objects soliciting my attention and I seem to myself to be failing in the discharge of the duties of my several relations, as Member of Parliament, as father, and as a master [of household servants]. To thee, O God, I fly, through the Saviour; enable me to live more worthy of my holy calling; to be more useful and efficient, that my time may not be frittered away unprofitably to myself and others, but that I really may be of use in my generation, and adorn the doctrine of God my Saviour. I am a poor, helpless creature, Lord, strengthen me.

FOR MEDITATION:
To be more useful and efficient. Wilberforce learned early in his career as a reformer from the writings of Philip Doddridge, who wrote: ‘nothing conduces more to the advancement of grace than the lively exercise of love to God, and a holy joy in him. I would remind the real Christian of those mercies which tend to excite that love and joy; and in the view of them to animate him to those vigorous efforts of usefulness in life, which so well become his character.’

Doddridge then concluded with the following prayer:

‘Nor would I forget to acknowledge thy favour in rendering me capable of serving others, and giving me in any instance to know how much “more blessed it is to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). I thank thee for a heart which feels the sorrows of the necessitous, and a mind which can make it my early care and refreshment to contrive, according to my little ability, for their relief; for “this also cometh forth from thee, O Lord!” (Isaiah 28:29) the great Author of every benevolent inclination, of every prudent scheme, of every successful attempt to spread happiness around us, or in any instance to lessen distress.’

Dear Lord,

I pray for the power to rejoice amid my trials, my pains and my sufferings.

Fill my heart with your peace, and let that peace guard my heart and mind.

Today I will choose to walk in the light that you have shone on my path.

Though the darkness is real, I will place my hope in the coming joy.

a prayer to release control

Dear Lord,

I kneel before you and ask for wisdom and guidance.

I am having difficulty releasing control and trusting you.
Some days it seems impossible to let go of control.
In your mercy and kindness, please help me to know how to let go.

Teach me how to trust you with all of my heart and not with my head.

Bless me that my approach to life might be from my heart and not my head.

Cause me to let go of all the fears and worries that grip me.

Please fill my heart and soul with your love and peace.

In all my ways I commit to following you.

You are worthy.

A Prayer for Strength and Healing

Heavenly Father,

I come before You with a heart full of faith and trust in Your power to heal.

Lord, You are the Great Physician, and I believe in Your ability to restore health and bring comfort in times of distress.

Just as Your word says, “Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for You are my praise,” I place my hope and confidence in Your promises.

Father, I surrender my pain, my worries, and my fears into Your hands.

I ask that You touch me with Your healing hand, renew my strength, and fill me with the peace that surpasses all understanding. Help me to trust in Your plan for my life, knowing that Your plan is to prosper me and give me hope and a future.

Lord, I also lift up my loved ones who are in need of healing.

You know their needs, their struggles, and their hearts. I pray that You would surround them with Your love and grace, bringing healing to their bodies, minds, and spirits.

Let Your Holy Spirit work within them, bringing comfort and hope where there is pain and uncertainty.

May Your presence be felt in every moment, and may Your peace guard our hearts as we wait for Your miraculous touch.

Thank You, Lord, for hearing our prayers and for being our ever-present help in times of need. We give You all the praise and glory, trusting in Your unfailing love and mercy.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

giving thanks when life is hard

Dear God,

My world and my life is a mess. I wake to deal with a lot of sorrow and pain.Yet you, O Lord, are precious in my sight. I am thankful for you and the people who are in my life. There is no one like you. Your love breaks me and your mercy encourages me every day.

Thank you for your constant presence and for guiding me through every step of my journey. I am grateful for the strength you provide in my weakness, the comfort you offer in sorrow, and the hope You instill in my heart. All praise to you Lord. Honor and glory belong to you.

Thank you for the lessons I am learning through this difficult time, for the strength I am building by overcoming it, and for the way it is making me more like you. Help me to remember my blessings, no matter how small they may seem, and to see the good that can come from this hard time.

Remind me that You are bringing beauty from my struggles and that peace can be found in letting go. Please give me the wisdom to navigate this challenge and the patience to endure it. Continue to be with me, and help me to always have a heart of gratitude, even when it is difficult.

A prayer to be courageous in our different callings

  We are counted your people.

We are grateful to be called by you, and
glad for our special way of faith in the world.

You have marked us and named us and signed us,
    and we are different,
           different memories,
           different hopes,
           different fears,
           different commands,
           different ways of being.

That difference we find glorious, but at times a burden too severe.

We yearn to be like the others,
           like the others in power,
                    in money,
                    in freedom,
                    in certitude,
                    in security,
           like the others,
             uncalled, unburdened, unembarrassed.

We come to you in that deep trial of difference and likeness.
    Engage us in our difference,
Give us courage for our different vocations,
and energy for our different hope.

In the name of your crucified, Easter One, so unlike all the others.
  Amen.

a prayer for provision and guidance

O Great Spirit, our Father from above, your name is sacred and holy.

Bring your good road to us, where the beauty of your ways in the spirit-world above is reflected in the earth below.

Provide for us day by day — the elk, the buffalo, and the salmon. the corn, the squash, and the wild rice. All the things we need for each day.

Release us from the things we have done wrong, in the same way we release others for the things done wrong to us.

Guide us away from the things that tempt us to stray from your good road.

A prayer for forgiveness of sins

The apostle John tells us, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9, KJV). Here we find the promise of God to forgive our confessed sins. To ignore or to neglect this promise is to steer a perilous course. God commands us to confess our sins and promises to forgive our sins. That we should confess our sins daily is clear. What confession means and what it involves are matters that need some elaboration.

We can distinguish between two kinds of repentance: attrition and contrition. Attrition is counterfeit repentance, which never qualifies us for forgiveness. It is like the repentance of a child who is caught in the act of disobeying his mother and cries out, “Mommy, Mommy, I’m sorry, please don’t spank me.” Attrition is repentance motivated strictly by a fear of punishment. The sinner confesses his sin to God, not out of genuine remorse but out of a desire to secure a ticket out of hell.

True repentance reflects contrition, a godly remorse for offending God. Here the sinner mourns his sin, not for the loss of reward or for the threat of judgment, but because he has done injury to the honor of God.

(R.C. Sproul:  Does Prayer Change Things?).

---

Lord, help us to truly confess our sins that we may experience true forgiveness of our sins.
Help us make it a daily and regular discipline to reflect on our lives, our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. Help us to be open and honest with You to let you reveal to us any sin in us that we may confess and experience forgiveness.

Psalm 139:23–24:
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

A Prayer for Unity

Father God,

Because of Your death and resurrection, we are part of Your body—the global Church. Help us take our role in it seriously, knowing that our choices reflect how Your Church is perceived. Use mus to bring hope, love, and joy to the world, and empower us to build others up.

We pray that Your people will serve as an example of the unity that only Your love can bring. Help us promote unity in every environment we enter, seeking to understand others and keeping my focus on Christ. Grant us the ability to speak with understanding and compassion, reflecting Your love. Remove our pride in wanting to be right and replace it with a heart that seeks harmony.

You alone have the power to unite Your children. You cleanse sinful hearts, heal broken families, and bring divided nations back to You. Bring us together and give us a desire for unity.

Please mend the divisions within us and in the world around us.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

when our prayers are unanswered

As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O Lord.

My soul thirsts for you, the living God.

Come in power Almighty God!

My tears seem to be my food day and night.

My tears seem to speak to me and say, “Where is your God?”

Answer my tears O compassionate Father!

Yet these things I remember as I pour out my soul -

How sweet your presence is and how exhilarating it is to worship you.

I rejoice in you O joy giving Lord!

Yet I wonder why my soul is sad and in turmoil within me?

I want to hope in you God. I want to experience your power.

O come sweet Holy Spirit!

Yet even now, when my soul is cast down within me,

I remember you in this land of trials and testing.

I trust in you Jesus!

I want to hear your voice like the sounds of great waterfalls.

I long to hear you speak with power and having powerful affects.

Come O Holy Shepherd!

You are my rock, the One in whom I have trusted.

Come O God of deliverance!

My soul will not be cast down forever - the turmoil will end.

My hope is in you Lord. I shall praise you afresh.

Jesus is my salvation and my Lord!

Amen

A prayer for church leaders

Father God, we pray for those whom You have called to lead the church. We thank you for them. We thank you for calling them to this task, to be shepherds of the flock. Thank you for their obedience and faith to accept Your calling.

We pray that you will guide them and equip them. As they wait on you, may you speak to them through Your Word, guided by the Holy Spirit.

Help our leaders to be godly men and women whose lives reflect the character and teachings of Christ himself.

Give them wisdom to understand the times we live in and the direction we should go.

Give them the burning desire to go deep into Your Holy Word.

Give them the required gifts to lead us in a godly manner.

Give them the passion to constantly seek Your face in prayer and worship.

Give them the commitment to seek to live holy lives before You.

Give them the courage to make difficult decisions as directed by You.

Deepen their trust in you. Daily breathe Your life into them in a fresh way.

a prayer to be merciful

Help me, O Lord, that my eyes may be merciful, so that I may never suspect or judge from appearances, but look for what is beautiful in my neighbour's souls and come to their rescue.

Help me, O Lord, that my tongue may be merciful, so that I should never speak negatively of my neighbour, but have a word of comfort and forgiveness for all.

Help me, O Lord, that my hands may be merciful and filled with good deeds, so that I may do only good to my neighbours and take upon myself the more difficult and toilsome tasks.

Help me, that my feet may be merciful, so that I may hurry to assist my neighbour overcoming my own fatigue and weariness. My true rest is in the service of my neighbour.

Help me, O Lord, that my heart may be merciful so that I myself may feel all the sufferings of my neighbour.

I will refuse my heart to no one. I will be sincere even with those who, I know, will abuse my kindness. And I will lock myself up in the most merciful Heart of Jesus. I will bear my own suffering in silence.

May Your mercy, O Lord, rest upon me.

Amen.
