help us walk with you, Lord

Lord, teach me the way of your statutes,

And I will keep them to the end.

Grant me insight that I may keep your law,

And observe it wholeheartedly.

Guide me in the path of your commands,

For in them is my delight.

Bend my heart to your decrees,

And not to wrongful gain.

Turn my eyes from gazing on vanities;

In your way, give me life.

Fulfill your promise to your servant,

That you may be revered.

Turn away the taunts I dread,

For your decrees are good.

See, I long for your precepts;

Give me life by your righteousness. (from Psalm 119)

Listen to God in busy times.

Lord, when I am busy and stressed help me not to neglect You.
Help me to remember that You are always by my side ready to help.
Help me to pray and trust You.
But more than that help me to take the time in prayer to listen to what You are saying to me.
For if I don't listen, I won't hear Your words of comfort and wisdom.

Help time to listen, Lord in busy times.

In Jesus Name I pray.

Amen

A prayer when made redundant

Lord, I can’t believe this has happened.
We kind of knew the company
was in financial difficulties but never
thought it would come to this.
Lord, please help us. We’re going to need wisdom,

Please may we know your peace and

Praying in Jesus' Name

Question 180: What is it to pray in the name of Christ?

To pray in the name of Christ is, in obedience to his command, and in confidence on his promises, to ask mercy for his sake; (John 14:13–14, John 16:24, Dan. 9:17) not by bare mentioning of his name, (Matt. 7:21) but by drawing our encouragement to pray, and our boldness, strength, and hope of acceptance in prayer, from Christ and his mediation. (Heb. 4:14–16, 1 John 5:13–15)

-----

Lord, teach me to pray in Jesus' Name by teaching me obedience to your commands and trust in your mercy, grace, and promises. Lord, encourage me to pray in boldness, strength, and hope, believing that when I have such an attitude and live in obedience, You not only accept my prayers but joyfully wish to grant them because they are indeed asked in Your Name,

prayer for changes

God of Yesterday,

we knew you then: your promises; your words; your walking among us.

But yesterday is gone.

And so, today, we are in need of change.

Help us see life now

not through yesterday's stories but through today's.

God of Endings,

What we thought would not end has ended.

And we find ourselves here wondering where we are and how we got here and where to go from here.

Be with us, here, at the end.

Help us place our feet on this ground help us lick our wounds, help us look up and around.

Help us believe the story of today.

Because you know all

about the endings of today.

And you are not afraid.

Amen.

the journey of renewal and transformation

That first tent symbolizes the present time, when gifts and sacrifices can be offered; but it can’t change the heart and conscience of the worshiper. [Hebrews 9:9 VOICE]

This verse paints a picture of two forms of religion. The former, one of external adherence to rules. The latter, an inner transformation. Sadly, the former is much more prevalent than the latter. I know. At age 26 I had an inner change yet chose a life lived adhering to rules and principles.

I sometimes think of my life as the inward journey from Javert to Valjean. In Les Misérables, we learn of Javert, the policeman who loved the law, and of Valjean, the broken man who found extravagant grace from a bishop. One lived a life of obedience to the law. The other a life of love.

In the end, Javert finds no life in the law. He kills himself instead of changing. Valjean's life ends being surrounded by loved ones. His life was marked by an inner transformation of heart and conscience. The story reminds me that serving God is all about serving with love, mercy and compassion.

Renew me again dear Lord that I might serve you with all of my heart.

God Invites Us Into Unceasing Conversation

God Invites Us Into Unceasing Conversation

Prayer is not introspection. It is not a scrupulous, inward-looking analysis of our own thoughts and feelings but it is a careful attentiveness to the Presence of Love personified inviting us to an encounter. Prayer is the presentation of our thoughts— reflective thoughts, as well as daydreams, and night dreams—to the One who receives them, sees them in the light of unconditional love, and responds to them with divine compassion. This context of thinking in the Presence, of conversation and dialogue with Love, is the joyful affirmation of our gentle Companion on the journey with God who knows our minds and hearts, our goodness and our beauty, our darkness and our light. The Psalmist prays the prayer for us (Psalms 139:1–3; 23–24):

O Lord, you search me and you know me, you know my resting and my rising,

you discern my purpose from afar.

You mark when I walk or lie down,

all my ways lie open to you. . . .

O search me, God, and know my heart. O test me and know my thoughts.

See that I follow not the wrong path and lead me in the path of life eternal.

A Prayer for Hope

Father God,

In difficult times it is easy to lose hope and faith in You.

Father, we admit that we've lost sight of You.

We ask that Your Holy Spirit reignite within us the hope that we need, deep down in our bones. Give us a still heart and spirit because we know that You are a loving God that will never abandon.

Your grace abounds in the deep unknown, and this truth is what we need help placing our hope in.

We know that when our hope is built on You, we can stand firm through any storm. For You are our God, always, in times on the mountaintop and times in the valley.

Amen.

We wait in hope for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
in him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
even as we put our hope in you. (Psalm 33:20-22)

A prayer for maturity

The Mark of Maturity

Read Philippians 1:6–10

This is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ. (Philippians 1:9–10)

Paul found joy in his memories of the friends at Philippi and in his growing love for them. He also found joy in remembering them before the throne of grace in prayer.

This is a prayer for maturity, and Paul began it with love. He prayed that they might experience abounding love and discerning love. Christian love is not blind! The heart and mind work together so that we have discerning love and loving discernment.

The ability to distinguish is a mark of maturity. When a baby learns to speak, he or she may call every four-legged animal a “bowwow.” But then the child discovers that there are cats, mice, cows, and other four-legged creatures.

One of the sure marks of maturity is discerning love and loving discernment.

Something to Ponder
With daily decisions, do you tend to seek what is good, or do you try to discern what is truly best?

----

God, You are my Saviour and my Lord.

Help me to grow in maturity so that I may please You in all that I do.
Teach me to love others the way You love me.
In my daily decision-making, give me discernment to know not just what is good, but what is the best.
Help me to grow in maturity by giving me discerning love and loving discernment.

In Jesus' Name
Amen

a prayer for trust

Heavenly Father,

It feels impossible to feel steady right now. Sure.

Sure that anything is going to be alright.

Lord, convict me of my own desire to trust of people, in countries, in systems. may my one desire to be to trust in You alone.

Teach me to trust You in the steady and the instead times. The times that are unsure, uncertain, and chaotic.

May Your fear comfort and guide me in my own fear. May Your faithfulness be what I put my trust in.

Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord, my soul.

I will praise the Lord all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
Do not put your trust in princes,
in human beings, who cannot save.
When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.
Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord their God. (Ps. 146:1-5)

a prayer of submission

Dear Lord,

Our hearts are filled with your presence.

We cannot help to pray.
We come renouncing our pride and seeking your humility.

Your love consumes us and your compassion fills us.

You have given us everything we need.

We ask you today for help to lead lives worthy of your calling.

When we struggle help us to remember that you are there.

When our lives seem easy open our eyes to see those who need us.

We submit ourselves to you and to your ways.

We ask for your kingdom to come and your will to be done in us.

To you be all glory and honor.

Amen.

help us to walk together in peace

O God,

Challenge us to do more than sing and pray, but go out and work as though the very answer to our prayers depended on us and not upon Thee.

Help us realize that man was created to shine like the stars and live on all eternity.

Keep us, we pray, in perfect peace; help us to walk together, pray together, sing together, and live together until that day when all God’s children, Black, White, Red, and Yellow, will rejoice in one common band of humanity in the kingdom of our Lord and of our God, we pray.

Amen.

The Spirit of God Prays in Us

The Spirit of God Prays in Us

Silence means rest, rest of body and mind in which we become available for him whose heart is greater than ours. That is very threatening; it is like giving up control over our actions and thoughts, allowing something creative to happen not by us but to us. Is it so amazing that we are so often tired and exhausted, trying to be masters of ourselves, wanting to grasp the ultimate meaning of our existence, struggling with our identity? Silence is that moment in which we not only stop the discussion with others but also the inner discussions with ourselves, in which we can breathe in freely and accept our identity as a gift. “Not I live, but He lives in me.” It is in this silence that the Spirit of God can pray in us and continue his creative work in us. . . . Without silence the Spirit will die in us and the creative energy of our life will float away and leave us alone, cold, and tired. Without silence we will lose our center and become the victim of the many who constantly demand our attention.

Henri J. M. Nouwen

Romans 8:26–30 (ESV)
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

How long

Do you ever feel like this deep down in your spirit?

How long, O LORD???

Do you ever pray and wonder if the LORD is listening? Does He hear?

Does He care about the anguish in your soul? The heartache? The pain?

One thing I have learned in my Christian walk is that He does listen and He does hear. He does care about our brokenness. Our deepest hurt. Our confusion.

Never give up. Never quit praying. Never stop crying out to God.

He loves us with an everlasting and incomprehensible love. A love we can trust. A love we can depend on.

We may not always be able to see that He is working, but we can know deep down into the depths of our being that He is.

Because His Word tells us this truth.

"In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me." (Psalm 120:1) CSB
Hang on to the promises of His Word. Hang on to His love.

And cry out to Jesus.
