Joy, the Source



Psalm 43:4 (NLT)
     “….I will go to the altar of God, to God—the source of all my joy…….”



Father you are the source, the center, the circumference, the core, the substance and the essence of our joy. Your joy is infinite in that it is eternal and finite in that it is personal. Your joy gives us strength in our trials and hope in our despair. Your joy heals broken hearts and restores shattered dreams. Your joy brings meaning to life and expectation to the future.


How beautiful and with what amazing insight did Habakkuk write:   “Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, 18  yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!” Habakkuk 3:17-18 (NLT)


Father such is the nature of your joy given to us through trusting you. It is your very presence with us and in us that Jesus speaks of in John 15:11 (NLT) “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!”


Thank you Father for the joy that is ours in Christ as the Apostle Peter spoke of: “You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy.” 1 Peter 1:8- (NLT)

Prayer of Confession and Forgiveness (Psalm 32)

Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven,
whose sin is put out of sight!
Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt,
whose lives are lived in complete honesty!
When I refused to confess my sin,
my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long.
Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me.
My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat.
Finally, I confessed all my sins to you
and stopped trying to hide my guilt.
I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.”
And you forgave me!
All my guilt is gone.
Therefore, let all the godly pray to you while there is still time,
that they may not drown in the floodwaters of judgment.
For you are my hiding place;
you protect me from trouble.
You surround me with songs of victory.
The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life.
I will advise you and watch over you.
Do not be like a senseless horse or mule
that needs a bit and bridle to keep it under control.”
Many sorrows come to the wicked,
but unfailing love surrounds those who trust the Lord.
So rejoice in the Lord and be glad, all you who obey him!
Shout for joy, all you whose hearts are pure!

Prayer for America

How can we not give thanks for the way that You have overseen our nation?
From our very beginnings we have been evolving and becoming more free.
From within, you have inspired prophetic change for the poorest among us.
From without, you have set us as a city on a hill. A place of hope for immigrants.

Yet we have a long ways to go in our quest to bring your kingdom on earth.
Shower our nation with love for our fellow citizens and those who are not like us.
Shower us with grace that we might be a people who see the best in each other.
Shower our leaders with wisdom that they might lead in ways of peacemaking.

We pray Dear Lord that, one soul at a time, your kingdom will come in America.
That the sick, the hurting and the despondent will be ministered to and healed.
That the most blessed among us will capture a vision of sharing their good fortunes.
That blessed hope would be our banner and divine love would be motto.

So to you we pray. To you we place our hope. Yours is the kingdom. Forever.

Settling for Mediocrity

Father,

Help Your people not to settle for mediocrity. Help us not to be satisfied with playing church and going through the motions. Put in our hearts the desire to seriously follow You. The Relationship That Matters Most



Psalm 18:1-2 (NLT)
     1 I love you, LORD; you are my strength. 2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.

Father thinking of the Psalmist’s relationship with You and the benefits derived from that relationship it is little wonder that he would say:  “O LORD, I give my life to you. I trust in you, my God!” Psalm 25:1-2 (NLT)

Father the basic relationship we have with you is encapsulated in two words: love and trust. There is no better response that we could give for Your gracious care of us than to love and trust You. So may we each day demonstrate to You and the world our appreciation and gratitude for such compassionate care, provision and protection.

Father You are my God, my all in all, my everything! I will say with the Psalmist: “Praise the LORD! Let all that I am praise the LORD. 2 I will praise the LORD as long as I live……”  Psalm 146:1-2 (NLT)

Prayer of Gratitude to God

Father, dear Father,

I am so grateful for everything that you have given me.
Thank you so much for the loved ones in my life,
For the many ways in which I am cared for and supported.
Thank you for the many ways I can serve and give to others.

For the beauty which is all around me,
For the skies and the ever changing cloud formations,

Mysterious Journey

Sometimes life can be a puzzle. My current bout with cancer is an illustration of this. A few weeks ago the doctors seemed to be sure that my cancer had moved to my liver and was therefore inoperable. Now a recent biopsy has come back negative, and it may be operable after all (more tests are required). Sometimes we need to trust God even when life does not seem to make sense.

Father,

I thank You that You know what is going on even when we do not. Help us to trust You in whatever difficulties we find ourselves in. Help us to trust Your will. even if we do not know what is happening. And give us Your peace through the ups and downs of the circumstances we do not understand.

Father, we lift up our hands to You in prayer ~~hands You have made holy.  May they reveal hearts that are committed to forgiveness and reconciliation with each other.  It is an awesome witness when we, Your people, lead lives f humility and gentleness before a watching world, when the music of or worship is not just heard in Your holy sanctuary but reverberates through all our relationships.  I love You.  Amen.

The Triumph of Good




Father you teach us in your Word that evil is any attitude or act that is contrary to your holy nature. We saw such an expression of evil in the horrific terrorist attack on so many innocent people in Nice, France. We pray for their families that have lost such dear loved ones and for those recovering from their injuries. The wicked havoc that can be caused by even one person is almost unthinkable. Yet we do not have to be overcome by such actions. Lord you remind us how evil is overcome through the story of the Good Samaritan.


Luke 10:30 & 33-37 (NLT)
     30 Jesus replied with a story:


      “A Jewish man was traveling on a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.

     33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’ 36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. 37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”


Father I thank you for the first responders: the policemen and firemen, the nurses, the doctors and just common people who mercifully intervene to help in any way that can. So many expressions of goodness and kindness for those hurting.  Good does triumph over evil.  


Father we know that good is not impotent but powerful in conquering evil and that is why you remind us:Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.” Romans 12:21 (NLT)

      Father you also admonish us to: “Follow only what is good. Remember that those who do good prove that they are God’s children…...and those who do evil prove that they do not know God.” 3 John 1:11 (NLT)

Father,

We live in an age of great moral confusion. Even Your people seem to be sometimes lost in this moral fog. Help us see beyond what is merely convenient to what is right. Help us turn to You for the answers to the moral dilemmas we face. Lift us above our self-centeredness  to see the need to put the needs of others first. Lead us through the moral fog into Your light.

Father, we are broken people living in a broken world . People are groaning in pain over lives lost. Some have given way to hatred and vengeance. We desperately need your Spirit to fill your people and make us agents of reconciliation, healing, and peace. Let us not give in to the forces that would further divide us and cause destruction. May we hear your voice, the voice of love. Amen

HEAVENLY SAFETY PATROL

We have just returned home from a 10 day trip which included many miles in a car.  We always pray for safety when we begin a journey and ask God to protect us and other travelers, especially during the summer months when so many families take vacations.

I call it the "Heavenly Safety Patrol" as I'm  sure guardian angels prevent accidents, and bring us safely home, all according to God's sovereign plan.

Today my pray is to once again thank the Lord for his protecting heavenly safety patrol.

Dear Lord, my heart is once again filled with gratitude and praise for a wonderful vacation, visiting friends and family, seeing you working in lives, and giving us safe travels over all the miles.
We give thanks.  We love you.  Amen.


Unbroken Love




Genesis 6:5-8 (NLT)
     5 The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. 6 So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. 7 And the LORD said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.” 8 But Noah found favor with the LORD.



Father it proves beyond question or doubt that the infinite greatness of your love for humanity is not broken by our sins that break your heart. What could be more amazing than that the Holy Triune God looks with such intense concern on those He created? I wonder with the Psalmist who asked: “O LORD, who are we that you should notice us, mere mortals that you should care for us?” Psalm 144:3 (NLT)


Father I am not surprised by your judgement which is always righteous and appropriate, but I am amazed at your grace in which Noah found favor because he believed you. And I am sure as you look at our world today your heart is broken by our sins and yet in judgement you remember mercy. So I pray for mercy for our country and world that is such need of your grace.


I ask this Father in the name of Jesus through whom: ” ….the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. Titus 2:11 (NLT)

Zephaniah 3:8
"Therefore wait for Me," declares the LORD,

O God as we wait for the Last Day, Your justice still prevails. You are the LORD of the universe. You are the LORD of all. Yet you are a God of compassion. The nations of the earth say there is no God. The kings of the world are far away from you. O gracious and loving God who is just and righteous. We thank you that your grace still sustains us and your mercy is new every morning. If it were not, we would have perished. Be merciful on us, O Merciful Father.

Love and Truth

Father,

Help Your people in their political endeavors to reflect Your love and truth. Help us to stand for the principles You would have us stand for. But may we do it in a way that reflects Your love. May we not legitimately be perceived as those who hate. But may we not jettison our convictions to accomplish this. May we reach out in love to those who need Your grace. Help us to remember that we are sinners saved by grace. Let us not condone sin, but let us act to seek and save that which was lost.

FREEDOM

Father as we celebrate our freedom this week-end help us to remember that true freedom always has limits. And that when we violate those limits it ultimately results in the loss of freedom. You have instructed us to: “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 1 Peter 2:16 (ESV)


Also Father may we be mindful that this precious freedom was created by you and for the full benefit of the human race. Freedom has no ethnicity, nationality or human origin. You said to Adam: “…..You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden—17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” Genesis 2:1r-17 (NLT) 


So Father we gratefully rejoice in the freedom You graciously gave us and ask You to help us to protect and preserve it for generations to come. We ask this in the name of Him who has freed us.

     ”…..So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” John 8:36 (NLT)

Prayer for a Toxic Boss

Give the boss your justice, O God.
May she judge her team with righteousness,
And those with a steep learning curve with hope.
Let the mountains bear prosperity as she credits workers for their work.
May he listen to the wisdom of the poor and experienced on his team
and defend their cause.
May righteousness and honesty flourish under him,
So the team has success and all they touch may progress.
Turn his ignorant bloviating
To intelligent questions.
Set her mind on reaching out with wisdom and skill to others
Rather than hunkering in protective maneuvers.
Free his tongue to utter truth
Rather than reacting with clichés that obscure ignorance.
Separate her ego from the work
So she can direct her team and fix her talents on our larger goals
In her days may the righteous flourish and peace abound, till the moon be no more!
