Breaking the Cycle

We as a nation seem to be caught up in an escalating cycle of violence. We need the help of God to get past this.

Father,

I pray that the violence may cease. I pray that it may cease in a way that brings about greater justice and fairness in our society and leads to reconciliation between all parties involved. I pray for Your comfort and peace for those who are who have lost loved ones and are mourning. And I pray we may one day reach a place where we judge people by their character and not the color of their skin.

In Jesus' Name,
Amen

Prayer for Grace and Love

Father, in the midst of what seems like a firestorm of controversy, keep us mindful of the mission you have given us. Help us to focus on the gospel and love those around us with your love, no matter what their views on different things. Help us to look past the things that really don't matter and focus on our unity in Christ. As we deal with those outside Christ, help us keep in mind that we are called to invite them to follow Jesus, not to make them better people. Help us to remember that we cannot change an individual's heart, that only you can do that. Let us be known more for Who we are for than for what we are against. Amen

SEARCHING FOR WORDS TO PRAY

I falter where I firmly trod,
And falling with my weight of cares
Upon the great world's altar-stairs
That slope thro' darkness up to God,
stretch lame hands of faith and grope...
for words to pray.

Eternal God, who hast been the hope and joy of many generations, and who in all ages hast given men the power to seek Thee and in seeking to find Thee.  Grant me I pray a clearer vision of Thy truth, a greater faith in Thy power, and a more confident assurance of Thy love.

When the way seems dark before me, give me faith to walk trustingly.

When much is obscure to me, let me be all the more faithful to the little that I can clearly see.

When insight falters, let obedience stand firm.

What I lack in faith let me repay in love.  Amen

54

Well Father, few will remember and far less know where car 54 was. But you know and you also know that Wanda and I are celebrating 54 years of marriage. What we know is that during these many years of marriage your grace has sustained us. Our love for each other has nurtured and strengthened us. Our family and friends have encouraged us. And your Word has guided us. It has truly been the trip of a life time. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is more than just the title of a movie; it is the summary of our journey together.

So, thank your Father that you gave me a woman who loves me and whom I love with all my heart. Thank you for your kind and generous wisdom that made 54 possible and I trust with many more to be added.

Amen

early will I seek

O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for you;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.
(Psalm 63:1)

Do we thirst and long for our God like David did?? Are we seeking Him early? Are we seeking Him at all? Let's purpose to draw near to our God and long and thirst for a relationship with Him. Let's purpose to seek Him first each morning and get ourselves and our day started right! He is the thirst quencher. He is the answer to our longings. He is water to the dry spirit and food to the hungry soul. Let this be our prayer daily and we will begin to see Him manifested greatly in our lives!

To Be Forgiven and Forgive

God commands us to forgive as we were forgiven. This is often a difficult thing to do. We need God's power to do it.

Father,

I thank you for the forgiveness that comes from putting our faith in Christ. Help us to live in the light of that forgiveness. Give us the power to forgive others as you have forgiven us. Help us to put aside anger and bitterness and live in the freedom that comes from putting these aside,

Prayer for Charleston and All of Us

Father, we pray for the people of Charleston, for the families of those killed and for those injured. We pray for continued healing and strength in the weeks and months ahead. Thank you for the gospel we have seen in the forgiveness extended toward the shooter. Let that spirit of forgiveness and love spread throughout the city, throughout the state, and throughout the nation.

We pray that you would take what was meant for evil and turn it into the good of repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation between races, between denominations, between political parties. May your church be united in the love of Christ and may the world know who we are through that love. Amen

FATHER FORGIVE THEM....

Luke 23:34  Jesus said "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing..."

Dear Lord, in the aftermath of the horrible tragedy in Charleston, South Carolina, there are families that had their loved ones ripped from their lives ~ and yet, I watched amazed at the love and forgiveness they were showing to the one who had done this terrible deed.  I was reminded of our Lord, and his forgiveness of those who were crucifying Him.

Forgiveness is a powerful thing.  Not only were these family willing to forgive, but to want him to repent and find forgiveness from a Holy God.

Lord, our hearts reach out to Charleston.  Lord, our hearts reach out to everyone who is lost and needs forgiveness and a Savior.  Amen.

Honor Your Father

Exodus 20:12 (NIV)
   “Honor your father ……..”

Dear heavenly Father this Father’s Day finds my heart stirred with thoughts of my Dad, raised in the country, a child of the great depression who lived through many difficult days. And though his years were few, just 52, he loved his family and worked hard to provide for us. My memories of him are limited for I only knew him for 12 years before our home was broken through the stress of irreconcilable human relationship that often leads to despair and divorce.

Yet, he was my father, I bear his name and image. Some of his traits and disposition are mine. And though I did not know him well here, we will get far better acquainted in heaven where all things will be made new and infinitely better. So Father, I thank You for my Dad, and want to honor him with an expression of my love and respect that will find its full bloom in heaven and our anticipated joyful reunion.

Through Jesus with whom all things are possible!

live right or die

Heartfelt prayer of A.W. Tozer:

O God, let me die rather than go on day by day living wrong. I do not want to become a careless, fleshly old man. I want to be right so that I can die right! Lord, I do not want my life to be extended if it would mean that I should cease to live right and fail in my mission to glorify You all of my days!

We need to voice honest supplication to our God and then purpose to walk in His ways!

Facing Death

One of the more difficult things in life is facing death, whether your own or that of someone you love. I went through that again, not for the first time, in my wife's recent bout with cancer. (The outlook at this point is reasonably positive, the doctor thinks he got it all, but  she still faces chemo and possible recurrence, but at one point it sounded more serious then it was and I was forced to genuinely face the possibility that I might lose her.)  In this situation it is important for Christians to remember that we serve a God who conquered death.

Father,

I thank you that even death is defeated foe. I pray for those who are facing death in one form or another that they may turn to You, trust in You and You would give them Your peace. Help those who trust in You to remember that temporariness of this life and to number our days. And help us to live as those for whom this life is not the end. Help not to avoid grieving, for sometimes it is appropriate, but to grieve as those who have hope.

WHATEVER IS LOVELY

Dear Lord, we live in an ugly world, we live with polluted TV programing, we live with many corrupt people in high places.  Everywhere we turn we are subject to hearing and seeing things we do not want, yet we cannot hide under a rock and pretend it doesn't exist.   I believe the answer, dear Lord, is in your Holy Word as Paul tells us how to deal with this godless world system we live in.

Father, every day let my thoughts be on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy.  When I see or hear something that is not, give me the strength to turn away, or brave enough to stand up and say a word of truth.

Lord, hasten the day that you will return and make everything right.  But until then may we be faithful to live each day acting out these attitudes of love, and give us opportunity to share your Gospel with those who will listen.  I love You.  Amen.

Jesus Loves Me

Hebrews 2:14 (NLT)
“…..God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die…….”
2 Corinthians 13:4 (NLT)  ……he was crucified in weakness….”

Father what a thought that the arms stretched out in weakness on the cross are now the arms that support us. “….. his everlasting arms are under you.” Deuteronomy 33:27 (NLT)

Thank you Lord Jesus that you know us and understand us because you became like we are and identified with us in our weakness, yet without sin. In our times of great vulnerability you hold us in the strength and security of your arms. Your love truly surrounds us and sustains in all circumstances. I pray that the world will come to understand the extent of your love for them and the great cost through which it was revealed.

Hope in Him

"Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
For I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God."

In Process

I am convinced that growth in Christ is a lifelong process. I am also convinced this can only happen through the power of God working in us.

Father,

I thank you that You are at work in Your people to change us. Help us to look to You for that power. Help not to trust in our will power or ability, but to trust in You. For it is only You that really change me. Help me to get out of the way so You can work, Your work in me.

Holy Spirit

Jesus, you promised your Spirit would come and live in us. We know this to be true, yet forget it in our day-to-day. Remind us that we have a guide and a counselor and make us sensitive to the Spirit's leading. Holy Spirit, teach us, remind us of what Jesus taught. Give us the power to live as the redeemed children of the Creator of all things. Amen

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD

Psalm 23 ~ "The Lord is my Shepherd . . . ."

Lord Jesus, You are my Shepherd, leading my heart into safe, green fields and beside quiet pools.  I choose to follow You out of the chaos of the worlds noisy traffic.  I choose to listen to Your strong, calm voice rather than to the voices of the world that stir up anxiety and fear within me.  I choose to take my place in Your family and see pasture with Your flock now and forever.  I love You.  Amen.

The Name that Matters

Psalm 34:1-3 (NLT)
1 I will praise the LORD at all times. I will constantly speak his praises. 2 I will boast only in the LORD; let all who are helpless take heart. 3 Come, let us tell of the LORD’s greatness; let us exalt his name together.

LORD, what an attitude change takes place in us when our life is focused on You. When we speak, boast, tell, and exalt Your Name our hearts are renewed and refreshed. Father you are everything we need, our present help and future hope. LORD, may those who feel helpless turn their hearts to You and find the joy and strength that comes from worshipping You. Yes may they praise and exalt in Your Name, that is above every name.

Breathe on me, Breath of God

Breathe on me, breath of God,
Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
To do and to endure.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
Blend all my soul with Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
Glows with Thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
So shall I never die,
But live with Thee the perfect life
Of Thine eternity.

Amen

For Healing and Courage

My wife, Sonia, has just been diagnosed with cancer, though they do not yet know exactly how serious it is and how far it has spread, though it does look serious. I would like to pray for those facing similar situations.

Father,

I pray for all those facing difficult situations and diagnoses, particularly those who know You. I pray for Your healing touch. But more than that I pray for the courage to trust You, whatever the outcome. I pray that You will be near and comfort such people and their relatives and friends. And I pray they may remember Your love and wisdom and power.
