Father, help us to keep our focus on knowing you as the real Treasure. While we are grateful for the many blessings you grant us, let them not become what we value most. Keep us from being satisfied with the things of this life. May we find our satisfaction in you. Amen

Oh dear God, that I would have this kind of determination to save one lost lamb.  You are the Great and Good Shepherd, and went out to fine me...and didn't stop until I was safe in your arms.  Oh Jesus, Shepherd of my heart, give me the intensity and determination to seek the lost, and share your gift of salvation to anyone who will listen.  Thank you for rescuing me.  I love you, Amen.

A Prayer from Anselm of Canterbury

O my God teach my heart where and how to seek you,
where and how to find you…

You are my God and you are my All and I have never seen you.
You have made me and remade me,
You have bestowed on me all the good things I possess,
Still I do not know you…

I have not yet done that for which I was made….
Teach me to seek you…

I cannot seek you unless you teach me
or find you unless you show yourself to me.
Let me seek you in my desire, let me desire you in my seeking.
Let me find you by loving you, let me love you when I find you.

Amen

open thy mouth wide!

"I am the LORD thy God which
brought thee out of the land of Egypt;
open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it"
(Psalms 81:10)

Oh, sweet Lord, today we are asking that you fill us up with your goodness! Drench us with your mercy and your grace, Oh, God. We lift up our needs to you in desperation for your mighty touch. We need you and we want you. Restore us and heal us precious Father. Strengthen us and comfort us and hide us under the shadow of your wing. We give our lives to you and ask that your will be done in each    petition we lay before you today.

Our mouths are open wide, Lord.... Fill them with you today.

Amen

A Father's Prayer

Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be; a son who will know Thee and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clean, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength.

God, You are...

Today's prayer is taken from God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse by James Weldon Johnson (originally published in 1927)
"God, You are the highest good of the reasonable creature, and the enjoyment of You is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied.
"To go to heaven fully to enjoy You is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here.
"Fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, children, or the company of earthly friends, are but shadows. But the enjoyment of You is the substance.
"These are but scattered beams, but You are the sun.
"These are but streams, but You are the fountain.
"These are but drops, but You are the ocean."
Amen

Update: Note that this prayer was misattributed in the source I originally found it in, "Prayers for Today" by Kurt Bjorklund. In fact the prayer if from Jonathan Edwards (The Works of Jonathan Edwards, Vol. 17: Volume 17: Sermons and Discourses, 1730-1733). Still a great prayer!

WISDOM ~WHO CAN DISCOVER IT?

Ecclesiastes 7:23,24 "...I am determined to be wise ~~but this was beyond me.  Whatever wisdom may be, it is far off and most profound ~~who can discover it?"

You wisdom, O God, is higher than I can reach and deeper than I can fathom.  How then can I hope to comprehend it?  How can I become wise if Your wisdom is so far away?  Praise be to You, Gracious God for Christ Jesus is Your gift of wisdom to us. Your Word became flesh in Jesus and lived among us.  In the incarnation You bridged the chasm of our ignorance.  Help me to know Christ, so that in Him I might receive and walk in Your otherwise incomprehensible wisdom.  Amen."  (John 1:14, I Cor.1:20-30, Jas. 1:5)

He hears

"For in thee, O LORD, do I HOPE,
thou wilt hear, O LORD my God"
(Psalm 38:15)

~~~~~~~~~~~
"Forsake me not, O LORD, O my God,
be not far from me"
(Psalm 38:21)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"And now, LORD, what wait I for?
My hope is in thee"
(Psalm 39:7)

~~~~~~~~
"I waited patiently for the LORD,
and He inclined unto me, and He heard my cry"
(Psalm 40:1)
~~~~~~~~~~~

Scripture clearly tells us time and time again that our LORD hears our cry. He responds to our cry. He is aware of our petitions to Him day and night. We never have to worry that God isn't listening. He is always close to us, tending to our needs and we can have the HOPE that only comes from a relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. He hears us!

Thanksgiving for Friends

Father, thank you for those you have brought into our live to love and encourage us, and to be loved and encouraged by us. Thank you for those who challenge us and refuse to let us continue when we go astray. We are grateful for communities of faith where we can grow and learn to follow Jesus. Amen

Proverbs 4:18  "The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day."

Thank you, Lord, for Your light of truth that makes my way both safe and pleasant.  With the light of Your presence You warm my heart.  With the light of Your wisdom, You enlighten my mind.  With the light of Your Word You illuminate my path.  How I long for the full light of that great and glorious Day when we, Your people, will reachour destination around Your throne.  There we will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for You, O Lord, will give us light.  And we will reign with You forever and ever.  Amen"  (Ps.43:3;89:15:Rev22:5)

Be Still and Trust

This thought came to me this week:

Faith is what we need when we pray.
Trust is what we need when we wait for the answer to prayer.

It is difficult to wait Lord. Help us to trust you after we have prayed.
